28-2 with 3 1/2" barrel

The barrels on one of my 28's sure looks shorter than the other, but nothing like the one in the OP.

The barrel profile at the frame on the top one looks different than the lower one also.
The front sight looks different also, like it has been shortened about 1/8".

Hi guys!
I have an offer for a modell 28-2 with unusual 3 1/2" barrel. I did not see the gun yet, but the seller said he measured the barrel and it would be 88mm which equals 3 1/2". Anybody heard of such a barrel length. It's no 28 with 27 barrel.
Thanks for your help.
Rainer

It also comes with RB?????? Handmade conversion???

I add 2 pictures: Frame new finish? RB made by "gunsmith"? Lousy welded front sight? Smith & Wesson odd shape. Not yet pictures of the right barrel side. For me a fake (if ofered as original)

Littlerocknroller,

There are a bunch of naysayers on this thread. I think it is a decent little revolver, except for the front sight. That I would have to change. If you like the 357 Magnum, and that frame fits your hand, go for it! You certainly won't find another one!

I round butted a S&W Model 28-2 about 4 decades ago and enjoy it. Did the same to a S&W Model 25-2. Here is a photo of the Model 28-2,

I did a couple of other things to it but if you like the round butt N frame, and the price is right, grab it.

Looks like a highly modified, unfinished project gun. The barrel has been chopped and the front sight moved, the frame has been converted to round butt, which may have damaged or destroyed the serial number, the recontoured grip looks interesting, not sure how well N-frame stocks will now fit.

If it passed function tests and the serial number was OK I would buy it, but not at the prices nice stock ones bring now. I don't think you would have to touch the serial number to round butt one, but that maybe a mute point as the OP and gun are in Germany and US laws do not apply.

I think whoever did it should have kept going to 2 1/2" with the ball/detent in the yoke cut like Jovino. N RB stocks probably won't fit with that weird rear frame profile.

For me, the acid test will always be will the gun fire 100 full power magnum rounds, not .38s, w/o difficulty. Many used guns look good, but show a different 'face' when firing. I realize there are far fewer S&Ws in Europe than here, so choice is limited. Seems like someone tried to do too much at one time on this gun. YMMV

So if the OP buys it, he either gets custom stocks for it or whittles some factory ones to fit. I have customs on my Model 28-2 and several others. I whittled some factory targets to fit my hand when I was competing. The factories provide ample wood to allow them to be fitted to the shooter.

Something not yet addressed is the finish on the frame. It appears to be a hard chrome of some type. These were popular in the states a few decades ago. Not sure about overseas.

I've leaned, through the years, never say never when it comes to S&Ws.

Looks like a cut down 4 inch barrel. The markings are not centered.

Not bad for a shooter if it works OK. The front of the barrel may have been damaged so they cut off 1/2 inch and reinstalled the sight.

I'm not saying your wrong but, it would take considerable work to remount the front sight properly.

Is that the guns ser# (N561623) in the crane cut out along with the Model# 28-2 ?

If it's a factory marking, that takes care of that 'issue'.
I'm not even sure the frame is the control part in Germany.

There is an Ulm Proof Hs mark on the frame. So can I assume that the gunsmithed firearm went thru (Repair)proofing after alteration which it would need to do?
Or is that a left over German Proof mark from orig importation into Germany and before commercial sale of revolver.
It's the only Proof Mark I can see.

Bbl cut of course. The S&W marking redone, likely a pantograph or Laser etch marking. Not unusual in this time. Lots of gunsmithing operations do their own bbl and caliber markings here with such equipment,,why not there..

The frame 'knuckle' looks altered maybe added to and reshaped.
A weld and reshape effort. Again with TIG and Laser Weld, not a big deal.

Front sight refitted, or maybe a new one made and fitted.
Some sort of new metal finish over all. Maybe a hard chrome, hard to tell from the pics for me. Maybe just the lighting in the pics.

There are some blemishes in it. The blotches around the cylinder bloc on the side of the frame suggest some damage to the finish like what trapped oil does to the bluing process.
But it may just be oil on the surface not cleared before the pics taken.

I'd have to really like the gun to go after it and I admit it doesn't do much for me.
If it did then rest would be the normal 'How is the bore and chambers, timing, trigger pull(s), does it push off', etc,,
...and Price
