Just picked up my new N frame. Bought off gun broker. Pictures on gun broker looked good. Looks even better in hand. Will try some pics tomorrow with daylight. Real suprise is the serial number. I did not inquire before purchase. Turns out it's one of the first n preface guns. # N1548. Only problem is non original grips. What would be the correct grips? Six inch barrel. John

I will take some pictures in the morning. Flash pics don't look good. Gun looks like it sat in a safe the last forty years. Interior was dry. I took it down and cleaned the dry oil. Blueing is 99%, and it is original. With shipping and my FFL fees I have 468.00 in gun. I think I found a winner. Too bad original owner took the magnas off. John

Only areas of blue loss is at muzzle. No endshake, cylinder gap is .004. Question, how do you get the pictures to show fullsize without going over websites size limit? John

The only way is if you upload them to a host site like photobucket.com or hunt101.com etc., make sure they are sized properly and copy the URL from there and paste at the bottom of your post.

Nice looking Revolver and most of us love the Model 28 both in 4 and 6 inch barrls.

During the '70s I purchased three Model 28s new from dealers, including one whose serial number is within 150 digits of the above number. (That one I bought in October of 1970) Each weapon had standard square butt service grips.

Great looking revolver. Now, you need to find a 4 inch model like this.

Congrats,

Hi jolsen, are you interested in swapping out your target grips for a set of magnas grips? I have a near new set that came off a Model 28.
Send me a PM if you are interested. tjtoolbox

Thanks guys, I bought this as a shooter and that is what it will be. I was surprised that it was in this condition after forty years. I don't have any smiths that are 100%. If I did I would sell them to a collector. I am 69 years old and I don't worry about future appreciation. If you take proper care and don't abuse them they will last many lifetimes. I love these old smiths. John

Model 28

My first Mod 28 was the best revolver I have ever shot, worst thing I ever did was sell it. 35 years later I just acquired a Mod 28 with a 6" barrel someone did a nickel plating job on it though, must be why the price was so good. ser. # S225016

Bought this one at an estate sale about 10 days ago. 4" barrel and a really nice shooting gun.

John,

That Highway Patrolman is in very nice shape. They are wonderful N frames and I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for the post,

Jerry

I love your advice. They're made for shooting and they'll out live us.

Nice revolver btw.....now I need one just like it !

Nice. A previous owner had a 27 finish put on my 28. Not original, but it's such a sweet shooter, I let it slide. Congrats on a primo pickup.

I may be shunned and attacked for my opinion here but thats all it is, my opinion. Other than cost restrictions i can see no reason to buy a model 28 when there are so many 27's out there. When i was younger and more dollar conservative i owned a couple of 28's. They shot as well as any n frame i owned and i liked them a lot. I also drove a used car with no A/C and no radio or stereo. As the years went by my guns got nicer as well as my cars. I now own three 27's and no 28's and see no reason to get one since i am not a collector. If i buy another n frame 357 it will probably be another 27 i guess i just like them too much.
