would someone please tell this old man what the fine spring is for that is behind the hammer nose "firing pin" on this weapon. no one in my crowd seems to know.

Due to the hammer arc in relationship to the opening in the frame for the firing pin, S&W made the pin movable to self align as it enters the recess in the fame that it protrudes through to strike the primer.
 
I have never seen such a spring on any of my smiths, but I have never
removed a hammer mounted pin either. They seem to be designed to self align. The Digest book of exploded handgun drawings shows this
spring to be a feature of N frame guns but not K or J frames.
