So I bought a copy of the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" 4th edition thinking it would answer my questions on my various S&Ws without littering the forum with them...and the first thing I look up there is no joy.
Trying to research my model 29-5 and in the general listings it jumps from 29-4 to 29-6? The only place I find it is under the silhouette listings and then just in passing. And this is not a 10.4 inch barrel, it is 8-3/8. Anyone have more info as right now I do not have a clue. And it is nickel too!

The -5 significantly added to the strengthening of the Model 29 to handle long term use of the .44 magnum.

29-4 1988 retention system on the yoke or cylinder crane strengthened, studs in frame were radiused; 83⁄8" version offered with integral scope mts.

29-5 1990 longer cylinder notches to prevent bolt jump, bolt and inner mechanism changed to reduce battering under recoil

The 29-5 was in production from 1990 to about 1994 and was the last of the Model 29's to come with the speedloader style wood oversize target stocks.

I got this one in 2010, really tames the .44 mag for pleasant shooting. Joe

Thanks for all so far. I guess what I was hoping to find was a listing of barrel lengths and finishes as given for other 29s. Anyone know why the 29 history jumps from 29-4 to 29-6 and only mentions 29-5s under the silhouette side bar?

I noticed the same thing in the SCSW. I think the heading for 29-5 was omitted, it looks like the 29-4 description ends at the bottom of the page and 29-5 starts at the top of the next page but there is no 29-5 heading so it seems like you are still reading about 29-4. The next heading is 29-6 making it appear that 29-5 was skipped. That's my assumption anyway.
