Have a 29 Classic 5". No serial number above yoke, only on grip frame. Serial number begins with TJA. Standard catalog says these were produced 1991-1994 which if I'm reading serial number data right should be a letter prefix starting with a B. Can't find any TJA serial numbers referenced. Anyone familiar with serial number range for this model/time period? Previous owner's notes indicate this is a 29-5 but model stamped on yoke could be a -5 or -6. I just can't quite make it out even with a magnifier.

I have two 29-5's with TJA prefix, two with TJB prefix and two with TJC prefix - all are Model 29 Classics or Classic DX's.

There is a section in back of SCSW, at the end of the three letter prefix listings, that mentions "examples of out-of-sequence triple-alpha prefixes" and goes on to say the list is only a few of the examples. I'm guessing yours fit here somewhere, out of sequence prefixes. The list has a M629-5 from 2000 that starts "MCR", and a M29-4 from 1996 that starts with "SWC". Any chance the P.O. has the original box? It would have the date of manufacture on the label.

Thank you everyone for your replies. The only T serial I could find mentioned in the the standard catalog was for semi-autos, so glad to hear of other examples of 29/629's with similar serials. Know S&W had a number of out of sequence serials, but war curious since I don't have the original box. Thanks again.

I have a 29 Classic, 5" also. My barrel is engraved differently than yours. Where yours says "Smith & Wesson", mine has the "44 Magnum" and there is no S&W engraved on the barrel at all. I have the "29 Classic" like you do. I am away from my guns right now but will check the number when I can.

An easy way to tell a -5 from a -6 is the front screw holding the rear sight on the gun. Small one is a -5 and larger one that also uses the front scope mount hole is a -6.
Best wishes.
