Boggy Head Rifle Range in the Francis Marion National Forest is closed for the second for time this year.

This time it a was a 40 acre fire that destroyed the facility.

I suggested a ways back that a Boggy Head 'users group' be formed to help take care of it but haven't heard a word back from anyone.

Boggy Head has one main fault and one main advantage.

First, it's always been unsupervised. Back in the old days it was established pretty much for deer hunters to zero their rifles. Over the years it turned into the 'wild west.

Second, that freedom allowed us shooters to experiment easily with different targets , chronos, untypical ballistics, etc. Several times I had the place to myself. It was freedom.

Too bad. :(

News stories have that Boggey Head range reopening tomorrow. Luckily, for you there is also a supervised range in that forest at Twin Ponds.

Twin Ponds is GREAT.....

Twin Ponds is great and it is the exact same distance from my house. But this area DOES NOT NEED the loss of any public range. I have to travel FAR to get to the next one. We have a very expensive private range and a good many expensive indoor ranges with lots of restrictions. My main worry is that Boggy Head will just 'go away' sometime in near future.

Twin Pond is a MARVEL for thi local. Modern, organized large and well supervised.

One of the best things Jim Thompson did when Governor of Illinois is he signed legislation preventing the closure of any existing ranges. This was after the debacle with the range off Lake Shore Drive just North of Chicago. It was closed for bogus reasons.
