I picked up a mod 65 at the Columbus Ga. gunshow yesterday. It is marked above the trigger with "NYSP".Does this stand for New York State Patrol or something else? Also I would like to add how happy I am to get this gun, it's going to be a replacement for the 65-5 that I had stolen a couple years ago. This is the first one I've seen for sale at a show since that happened and the best part is I got it for $375.00 OTD. I'm fixing to go out in the backyard right now and shoot it.

You got lucky! They have been hovering around 500 lately....I think that NYSP is New York State Police....and there is a collector of those (NYSP) around here who will probably jump in here shortly....good find....I love my 65 with 3" barrels ;)

Nice find.

That gun was issued to NY State Police Investigators (BCI) during the period 1981 through 1990. The gun it was meant to replace was the Colt Detective Special snubby, .38cal. Some Investigators griped about the size of the S&W versus the DS. The agency backed off and let those who wanted to keep the DS do so. I readily turned in my DS for the 65-3 and it was my carry gun until retirement. It was a darn accurate gun. I have one stored away now.

It was the last BCI revolver; the agency went to 9mm Glocks in 1990. The uniform Troopers' gun for that same period (1981-1990) was the 681, no dash, in .357mag.

Danged accurate revolvers, with amazing pointing abilities. Fast from the holster, fast onto the first target, fast on the swing to other targets . . . just perfect "little" K-frames . . . and GREAT looking too!!!

I've loved mine for decades now!!! You'll probably develop the same love for yours too. Congratulations!!!

Good find at a good price. I have one the same model and barrel length. They are a very nice shooting gun and great for cc if that is what you want to use it for. Happy shooting.

Shot it yesterday,it's just as good as the one I lost. The one I had was my favorite and it really meant a lot to me to get another one just like it for replacement.

Congrats on the rare find, 03clyde is right about the history of the guns. It took me a while to find mine. Could have bought them when the job sold them for dirt cheap at the time, got my issue 681 back at the time. Kick myself now for not getting the 65-3 at the time. Anyway, congrats on a great gun. Joe

Oh, the SHAME

Nice find, at a great price. By the way, I have no pictures of my 65-5, 3-incher, but I do think it's my favorite! I can't defend my honor if it requires posting pics, but I will defend myself and those I love!

I havea 65 that was an Oregon Department of Corrections gun. I didn't think much of it, when I bought it. I just looked like a stripped down no frills K frame, compared to my model 66s, include a 3" 66. But it had a 3" barrel and I liked that.

But as it turns out, my 65 is the most accurate, best shooting revolver I own. It puts my adjustable sight K frame 66s to shame. I don't know what it is...maybe the bull barrel or something, but it's the gun I would trust my life too as a woods carry gun. It will put hole into hole time after time at the range.

My otherwise beautiful 66s are just taking up space in the safe now.

Got a similar one. Had the same Compacts on it. Got it at a live auction. It was labeled as a "cut down Model 10", go figure. Price was too good to pass up. Has some cosmetic wear and tear but bought it for a "truck gun" so it doesn't matter. I've been trying to figure out the "engraving" on the side. My first thought was an "evidence room special" from back when departments still sold off guns rather than just destroy them. Maybe some of our exLEOs can shed some light.

Well, I'll be damned...It did happen. Guess us city folks have to see it to believe it. :)

mine is a 65-2 with a 4'' bl. and LPD 35 on the side. don't know where it come from but it sure shoots good, i use it when i go camping

Wow, good find, great price. I have a police marked 65-4 4" that I wouldn't take anything for. It is Marked WCS XXXX in the same place as yours.
Congratulations on replacing your stolen 65.
Peace,
gordon

I picked up a 65 3" a couple months ago. It's marked MASS STATE POLICE on backstrap. I think it's a 65-2, can't remember, but it's pinned and recessed. I was shocked at it's accuracy when I shot it. I don't understand why it shoots so well. I am guessing it's either the heavy barrel or just the balance/pointability of the gun, or both.
I am so impressed with the 65 3" that I am tempted to buy a model 13 3" that is for sale locally.

$375! I would have filled my saddle bags with them at that price! You did great! The three inch is a great carry gun. That extra one inch off the bbl makes a big difference when sitting down, and with the ejector rod being longer than the two inch models it approaches the Grail of being the Best Concealed Carry Revolver. Good work!

Smith Wesson 65-5 3"

Here's mine.
