Where I live that would be a steal. I paid $560 (fees included) for a 36 no dash 2 inch with holster wear on the barrel but in otherwise excellent condition. No holster, no box, no ammo or loaders. If what you show is part of the deal I'd say go for it and don't wait or it will be gone.

Seriously, that sounds like a good deal just for the gun, and a great deal if it includes the "box, etc". Is that a HB model 36-1? I paid $350 for one of those recently, in shooter-grade condition blue but including original grips & box etc. And paid $425 recently for a very nice pinned-barrel 60 no-dash, also no-box & with non-original grips

I believe this is a "no dash" model 36.
The dash # would come after the "mod.36" inside the crane correct? If so, there is no dash # on this model 36.

Looks like it would be a 36-1 that would have a 3" bull barrel. I'd do that deal.
That's what confuses me.. 36-1 would make it a HB, No Dash would make it a 1981 vintage? Or do I have it reversed??

Original wood grips, no wear and tear on any part of the revolver. Comes with all in the picture. Original matching box and the contents - warranty card (partially filled out but never submitted), original owners manual, original cleaning tool. Also comes with a leather S&W holster in great condition, carrying case and 100 rounds of .38 special (the ammo is old, but appears to have been kept stored tight, but I can't vouch for its reliability).

The 36-1 designates the 3" HB only. The 3" tapered barrel is not a -1.
That one looks tapered to me (I have a couple 3" HBs, and the pictured barrel definitely looks thinner.) $450 is a pretty darned good price.

LOL.. I haven't made an offer yet. The tapered is a little bit of a concern for me.. ala.. I don't own any tapered barrel revolvers.
IF that is a 36 no dash i.e tapered barrel as the heavy Barrels are designated -1 I wouldn't even dicker. (Well maybe I would ) The model 36 in 3" tapered barrel RB are quite scarce. Most 3" tapered are SQ butt. I bought one LNIB from 1971 a few months ago. Paid $550 with box paper and tool. I thought I did fine. If all that comes with it you should run over there right now and beg him to not raise the price to what it is really worth...GO GO!

Personally I like the looks of the 3" J's with a SB and I like my snubs with a RB ...but thats me,
Reality is a RB can have SB grips and feel like a SB where a SB cannot feel and look like a RB.
I agree there seems to be a lull in gun sales shifting to a buyers market so consider a lower offer.
I recently found a 36-1 SB no box or docs and paid $350 OTD.
BTW the factory really goofed by naming the 3" HB only as the 36-1 as it gave them no room for a revisional change in
the series...another S&W peculiarity.

The barrel looks tapered to me in the Pic. I'm going to take a look at it, FTF. Thanks for the advice, from all who have responded. I'll let you know how it works out.

Its definately a tapered barrel gun, I can tell by the front site and rib,

Good question... can't see anything beyond design, since IIRC there's only an ounce or so weight difference between tapered and HB. Incidentally, another giveaway, clearly seen in '49's pictures, is the front sight is longer on the tapered vs. the heavy barrel.
I don't know how scarce they are, but I didn't see a single nickel 3", much less a tapered one, while looking for 3s not too long ago. I ended up with a blue 36-1 RB and a 60-3 RB, though. Wouldn't mind a 3" nickel to sort of "round out" the group.

About 5 months ago, I passed on a square-butt 36-1 for $350 at a LGS because I wanted a plain old "Chief Special 38". I'd been kind of out of guns & shooting for some years and was just getting back into it. I did buy one shortly after that, a 2" RB pinned barrel model 36, which was the start of my S&W j-frame addiction (I now own 5). I'm sure this is a familiar story for some of you......
About 6 or 8 weeks later, after the addiction had taken hold, I checked that LGS for used S&W's & the owner told me he'd sold that 36-1 just the day before. ****!

I have a SB 2" model 36, and a RB 3" 36-1. The SB Chief has a set of boot grips Jim Badger made up for me, and it really feels nice in the hand. I would rather the 36-1 3" HB had the square butt, and the 2-incher had the round butt. Kind of a "the grass is always greener" thing I guess, but with some logic behind it -- that extra size of the SB grips does make it nicer to shoot, but that little extra corner on the grips make it tougher to conceal than a RB. Wouldn't matter on the 3-incher, I don't plan on CC'ing it since I own several 2" j-frame 38's.

I paid $450 recently for a 3" nickel HB round bujt that was in excellent condition. No box or papers. The price is decent and you will not be sorry about the quality of the gun.
