I concur on the dating, probably shipped in late 1947 or early 1948. My database shows a lot of 2" guns in this serial number range.

S960482 probably shipped in early 1948 but it might have left the factory in late 1947.

S959939 shipped in December 1947. That one is a 5" unit that is in my collection.

A large shipment in the S960000 range went to the NYPD in March 1948.

As Goony stated, there were 2" units in that serial range, but the NYPD guns all had 4" barrels.

Ok, I know I'm showing my age but I remember the days when that would be a $25.00-$35.00 pistol. in '65 I turned down a M-1917 and a ammo can full of ammo , the gentleman wanted $10.00. I thought that the pistol was too big and clunky. little did I know.

You brought back a memory. In the mid 60s I bought a like new S&W 1917 for $25. I don't remember what my selling price was but if I had it now it would that a big stack of $25. to catch it. Selling it was just one of the many young and dumb things I did. Larry

and in the late 1950s you could walk into nearly any pawn shop in America and leave with all the P-38s and Lugers you wanted for $25 each.

That is very nice and a great buy. I gave another C-note for mine a few weeks back. It's a '53 model. Came with some ugly target stocks. I replaced with some almost correct magnas that I had. Waiting to receive the proper diamond ones in the mail. These are very sweet guns.
