.32 Safety Hammerless 3rd Model

Here is the .32 Safety Hammerless carried over from another post. It letters as a factory 1 1/2" barrel. I have been told that somewhere around 20 1 1/2" Model Safety Hammerless 3rd models were produced and the vast majority of those were in .38 caliber. Possibly as few as 5 were made in .32 caliber in this configuration.

Thats one of the coolest things I've seen here. Can you post a few more detailed pics?
I'd like to see the barrel address so I know what to look for if I see one somewhere.
Anyone else out there have one of these? I'd like to see more short barreled topbreaks posted of any type. Factory or custom. I'm fascinated with these.

I have got to get educated about these things, I see those and think; ah crap--someone butchered that one. I almost lost a model 10-6 in 357 caliber (a few thousand made) because of my "butchered aye" attitude. I passed on a model 51 round butt because I don't like round butt J frames because I have big hands---stupid-stupid-stupid (600 of those ever made).

I think we all have regrets like that. You live and learn. It really is easy to look at that and think it's been butchered. That's one of the things I like about this forum. It's a great education! I enjoy reading the SCSW, but there's nothing like the first hand knowledge and advice and pictures that you get here!

Same same. Lemon squeezer is just a slang name for a Safety Hammerless.
Actually a third name for these was "New Departure".

SingleShot1891, Interesting gun, What's the serial number & where was it shipped? All the .32s with the 1 & 1/2 in. barrels were special order guns , one pair were ordered by a bank. The late Bill Maier specialized in collecting the New Departure models and had several of these 1 & 1/2 in. guns in his collection. They usually have serial numbers under #50,000 Some have the S&W patent date stampings on the barrel rib and over the top strap, some have no stampings on the barrel rib. Later on S&W settled on the 2 in. barrel for their catalog. I have the 1st .32 2 in (Bicycle Gun) S&W shipped, in my collection and it's in the 52300 ser. # range. It has the over the top stampings. Ed.

hey SS1891, how about a pix of the top of the barrel?

showing the address& any other pertinent markings that might be peculiar to this lil gem? Dern sure I've never seen or handled 1 before,& would like to know what/how a genuine article is marked.

S/n 241,XXX and it DOES letter as a 1.5" special order pistol. I will try to have pics late tomorrow ........

Also, for what it's worth, Bill Maier was a source for most of the information on the production numbers on this model. My father communicated through a mutual friend with Bill about this top break.

Bravo! The pearl grips look very nice. I'm not sure they are S&W originals though. I think they would have the medallion on them if they were, but I may be mistaken. But they look beautiful none the less. Thanks very much for the additional pictures.
