Good day, I've been shooting IDPA (CDP) for a couple of years now, and yearn for something a little different. Since I have lots of 45acp loaded up for the Gov't model, thinking of a wheel gun in that caliber. Looking at the 625 (approx 43oz) and the 325pd which weighs approx 26 oz. Any thoughts on recoil difference and life expectency between the two? Thanks in advance, Mike.

For games like IDPA, the 625 has it all over the 325pd.

For carry, the 325pd has the 625 beat (assuming weight matters to you).

I can't comment on durability, but my hunch is there would be fewer issues with the 625, but you'd have to shoot a lot of ammo through either to see a difference. Buy both. Shoot the 625 in games and carry the 325pd for defense!

I have two 625's (a 625-6 Model of 1989 with 5" barrel and a 625-8 JM Special with 4" barrel). They have been my "most shot" revolvers the past couple of years (5000-7500 rounds per year).

These are WONDERFUL revolvers for serious shooters in a MOST practical round. I load both .45 ACP and .45 AUTO RIM and they both work extremely well.

...sort of like the comparison of a sports car to a pick up truck....

depends on what each is used for....

I owned a 625 5" and stupidly sold it a couple of years ago. I've been kicking myself ever since. I feel much better now because this week I just acquired a 625 JM. In my opinion, the 625 is one of the greatest revolvers ever made by Smith. It's accurate, superbly balanced, fires a round that creates a big hole, and, with moon clips, can be reloaded faster than a semi.

I've never fired a 325 although I'd like to. I've handled a couple recently, however. The gun is MUCH lighter than a 625, weighing about 1/2 as much. My guess is that accuracy is unaffected by the lighter weight but that handling almost certainly would be. I would expect substantially more muzzle flip from the 325 than from the 625 and, of course, much greater perceived recoil from the lighter gun. That certainly would affect my ability to bring the gun back on target after discharging a round. I'm pretty confident that I'd be quicker reacquiring the target with the JM than with a 325.

N Frame 45ACP & 44 Spcl 3" to 5" Brl:

The 625 will shoot better off hand the heavier weight makes it easier to hold steady. I carry a Lew Horton Mdl 24 3" a lot. Lane Raab makes a heck of a holster for 3 to 5 inch N-frames. It is an IWB with really wide loop separation and real sturdy Leather keeps gun tucked nice. These comments are all from plenty of personal experience as I'm 63 years old.
Lane Raab does business as CABO Holsters (Carry A Big One) and has a website as cabo.com. And no I don't know him except as a great Guy to buy from. My motivation is simply to be helpful.

I have a 325NG and I like it, for a CARRY gun.

For a shooter I use a Mod 252.

I would go with the 625 for IDPA.

I owned a 325 PD for about a month. That was a month too long. The recoil with 230gr tore a flap from the web of my thumb. Recoil is unbelievable. Shot it 12 times. It's too darned light. Get the 625...very nice gun. If you want something to carry and only practice with light target reloads, then the 325 would be okay.
I have a .500 Linebaugh; I'm no stranger to recoil.
