357 in BEAR COUNTRY??

Now the bears are starting to "toss" jeeps off the road. Pretty soon we'll be talking about which vehicle we'll have to take into bear country! wyatte

I think the .357 will do a hell of a lot more damage to a black bear than most people think....they are NOT indestructible...I have hunted black bears every year for about 45 years, and have used everything from .357 handguns, to .243 Win all the way up to .375 H&H....if you slip one between their ribs or put one behind their ear.....they are gone, bye-bye.

I think the best thing is be careful.
Most bears will see you and split before you even know they are in the area.
But for that rare instance that you may have a bear on you,,,,,
I would want a DA revolver.
I wouldn't want to try to thumb back the hammer on a single action while a griz is shaking me like a terrier shakes a rat!
I'd pick a model 29 44mag. with 240gr. or heavier cast SWC bullet.
But if I was really concerned with the possibility of a bear or moose coming at me I would take a 12ga. 870 loaded with slugs slung over my shoulder.

It's the damned chickadees that have me worried. They're everywhere. And they look right through you with their god-awful souless eyes. Their constant threat of Chick-A-Dee-Dee-Dee is enough to get the hair standing up on your back....Lord help me, I've never been so scared of any wild animal.

What handgun would you recommend for dealing with these nefarious ruffians. There so damned fast and small ~ I can never seem to draw a bead fast enough and fire my 500 Magnum on them.

I like my modified Tahoe. Sure I would like a nice Jeep but I can't cram all of my junk in it. A Land Rover would be nice but the cost...

So I stick with my Tahoe and rub the tree limbs on the trail because the trails are getting narrower thanks to the ATV's.

It would be ill advised to travel in bear country in anything smaller than an up-armored Humvee.

12 gage with slugs, and my .357 HP as backup as it's the largest caliber handgun I own for now. They usually try to stay away from us, but with cubs etc, who knows.
As an aside,
I'm getting too old to carry all that iron, and my rifle. I think I'll get a mule. They're grouchy enough to run most critters off.

What's the deal with "How many pages is this thread going to go..and so on" Exactly how is that contributing?

Well let me explain.

This topic comes up in gun forums pretty regularly and gets a lot of comments. Kind of like which is better; 40 or 45? On one board last year this topic hit 30 pages and never really provided the definitive answer. I think the consensus on that board was a 10mm.

To some of us old farts, we have no other enjoyment, especially if there is nothing on TV, like tonight, so we wax on philosophically on the boards discussing the finer points of ammunition and guns.

It is much better than politics or the hollywood award shows. Ooops, both are the same.

Cheers and a belated welcome to the forum.

Six decades plus of hiking trails has convinced me very few bear , moose , wolf , or other interesting wild critters will come near while you have a camera at the ready . Put it in the bottom of your pack at peril of being trampled . For the real dangerous pests , human vermin , the 357 is good medicine , and superior to every other gun in the world , you do not have with you .

Agree. The topic usually gets beat around until everyone figures out that bear attacks in the lower 48 are pretty rare.

Now Japan, that's a whole different story.

Human attacks can and do happen. (Man vs Man)

I have a couple of co-workers who regularly get visits from Yogi and Bo-Bo if they leave their garage doors open. Here's the rub, neither of them have a gun in the home. By all accounts they should have been eaten years ago.

Well spoken, thanks. And as far as TV goes I'm about to toss it out the window for all the cr##p on the air.
Thanks again

Yep, King Kong is on ABC right now.

What gun would you need for King Kong? I see in one scene the ship captain has a Luger.

Ha, W A Y underpowered.

Remember this was supposed to be in the 20's or 30's.

This is what I'm carrying next time in the woods

Not too many bears here in Kansas, but I would think a round designed to put holes in car engines would take out a bear. Question is, can the guy behind the bang switch stay cool enough during the charge to do the job?

It was mentioned on the last bear thread. There is a book called "100 true Alaskan bear attacks" or something close to that.

I have read some of that book, and the only story I remember is the one where the Inuit woman killed an attacking brown bear with her mitten.

Anyway, maybe someone could post the full correct title to the book, it really is worth reading.
