.38/44 HD 4 inch

I have one, early 50s, lengthened chambers. Maybe 80%. I don't consider the .357 conversion to be a negative. I don't shoot it much, too heavy to suit me. I have wondered why S&W did not offer it in .357 from the factory.

Cuz, back then it would be competing with their other 357......The model 27.

Actually the did later.....The model 520.

I really want a 5". Beautiful revolvers.

Here is an image of mine,

I do not shot it often but when I do it really likes the Skeeter load.

Mine, a c.1954 4" was obviously a work gun at some point. The Magnas that came on it were in poor shape, the RH panel having been beat up badly.
Forum friend 'old bear' gave me a pair of period-correct diamond magnas and the BK grip adapter makes it even more enjoyable to shoot.

I like loading near-duplicate '.38 Hi-Speed' ammo for it, such as 160 gr LSWC-HP's at ~1200 fps. This will be with me in the woods this Fall.

38-44 HD

Well, I have post a pic of my pair too. Both still 38 and a prewar and a post war. A well used but not abused 1931 5 inch, and a pristine 1953/54 4 inch that went back to mothership in 1978. Just got to love them.

Sure is nice to see another HD from 1931 I have one, just like
yours, but not nearly as nice. Nice bright/shiny bore but not
well taken care of finish wise. All matching numbers including the grips. Never molested in any way. Left the factory August 1931

Regards,
Dick

I'd like to find a '31 example...My closest one shipped 6/4/1932...5" with all matching numbers, but certainly not pristine from its service with the Garnett Kansa PD...But I like it anyway...:D...Ben

Well, there is some muzzle wear...And under a glaring light at the right angle, the scuff marks on the side plate are obvious...Of course under the same conditions my own scuff marks are obvious, and I'm not as old as this gun by 15 years!...:o...Ben
