I am looking for insight into, and ultimately buying, a S&W revolver that would have been used/issued to a USN Naval Landing Force CPO circa 1900-1908. I have a repro Uniform, sword and soon the web gear and leggings. A sidearm is needed to make the outfit complete. Any help is greatly appreciated.

In that time frame, a M&P First Model (1899), Second Model (1902) or a very early third model (1905) could fit. You are looking for a serial number under roughly 150000. Narrowing in a bit, there were some Model of 1902 guns made under a Navy contract (and so marked) that have round butts and six-inch barrels. There is a picture of one in the Neal and Jinks book on page 131, if you have access to that. I have no idea how rare they are or expensive they might be. I will have to leave that to the military contract experts here.

Actually, there are two Navy contracts, each for 1000 guns. One is the
model of 1899, in the 5000 serial number range, and the other is the
model of 1902, in the 25000 serial number range.

There guns are almost always found in reasonably awful condition, at
least as far as the finish is concerned. The story is that they were
stored in barrels on board ship, and that is exactly what they look like.

I'd guess they are now in the range of $1500 to $2000. That is much
higher than they were 10 years ago, so this is just a guess of where
they are now. They show up every so often in auctions.
