.38 M&P Model of 1905 (3rd model)

A friend of mine has a .38 M&P Model of 1905 (3rd model). On the end of the cylinder there is a stamp (40 30 40).

I was wondering if anybody knows what this is all about.

I have only seen a picture of the pistol so far...will see it in person this weekend. I matched it to a picture I found in the 3rd edition of the S&W Standard Catalog. They indicate that the S/N range for this edition is 62450 - 73250 so I don't think the cylinder marks are related to the serial number. I will verify the S/N when I see the pistol in person....is it located on the butt or under the yoke on this model?

By the serial number on the cylinder you've likely got a 1905, 4th change. What is the SN on the butt ? Don't let the pictures throw you off. the picture showing 2nd target is NOT a target. The one showing 1st model is a US Army 1st, not all first models have the cartouche on the stocks. Could be in square or round butt depending ...

The stocks on the gun you show in your picture are from the 1920s. That would be consistent with a serial number of 403040. So would the shape of the knob on the extractor rod (not changed until about 1927). I think you will find that the number on the butt is 403040, hence a Fourth Change, not a Third Change.

I received a picture of the number on the butt and it is the same as the number on the cylinder....it appears to be a 4th change as suggested. Thank to everyone for your help and information...

Prior to model numbering's start in the late 1950s, the SN was stamped in six locations, one being on the rear face of the cylinder. SN 403040 would indicate likely shipment sometime in 1922. Some collectors would call it a Model of 1905, 4th Change, but S&W called it the Military and Police (M&P) model.

It's a Target, just not a great photo. Check the photo in SCSW-3 Pg. 137 and the front sight as well.

I stand corrected on that one. As long as it is only my eyes that are going at old age ... LOL.

This 3rd Change will be mailed to me on Friday (well to the FFL). I believe it would have shipped around Aug of 1913.
