New at the old stuff. Friend offered me a 4" M&P in pretty good shape, like 90%, for $300. Tight lockup, mirror bore, grips a little beat and might not be original. Great shooter. Deal or no deal? H.

I'd take it if you don't, but I'd also offer him $250 at first just to see if he'll come down any more.

There's a sense in which any decent old shooter could be worth about $300, but the concept "old M&P" covers a lot of ground. If you could share a photo it would help. In the absence of a photo a serial number (partial, if you prefer) might help us understand the age of this gun a little better. A short action M&P from the 1950s would interest me less than a round butt model of 1902.

Understood. i knew it was a broad reach. I'll get a look at it tomorrow and will indeed offer 250 if its in decent shape as seller described. More coming soon, thank you for the replies. H.

Dragon88 -- I've just put 15cents in an envelope. Please send me 18 M&Ps asap, okay? :)

I'm a little surprised to see people say $250. Is this because it's a private sale? I'm guess I'm expect these to go for more because IMHO they are more desirable than the police trad-ins that are on the market for $250-300.

S&W Neophyte:

You have to understand that, from the information that M1lover has provided
thus far, none of us here have any idea as to what this gun is. The
only thing we know is that its a 4" M&P . That tells us nothing, so
you ought to expect nothing in the way of advice.

We don't know the serial number, so we can't even tell if a pre-WW2
gun, or a post-WW2 gun. Without a serial number, we have no way of
knowing if its a scarce very early gun, or something from the 1970's
or even later.

Given this complete lack of information, I don't understand how
anyone can suggest a price, and I don't understand how the OP can feel
comfortable enough to make an offer.

Am I missing something here ?

Mike,
I realized the OP didn't give us much to go on, but my thoughts were along with what Todd said. I just figured anything in the condition the OP described would be worth that.

Yeah Mike, you're missing plenty. So am I. I have not been able to put together a meeting to see the revolver in question yet, nor have I asked the seller for the S/N. As I've stated, I knew it was a reach. H.

Unless it turns out to be a pistol that started life as a 5", Lend Lease Victory that has been reamed out, barrel cut to 4", refinished and aftermarket grips added. And I still see people asking $400 for those, just browse the auction sites..
