.38 Safety Hammerless 4th Model (Bicycle Gun) Found Grips

Agree. Take it out and see if the bore is still round. A belated Thank You for your acknowledgment. It would be a nice pocket carry piece.

In replacing the firing pin, one I replaced was slightly oversized. (On a .32 DA), I put the pin in my drill press, and on low speed applied 600 grit emery paper which removed very little material, but cleaned up and polished the pin. Installed it worked great. On the first install it would stick in the bushing hole.

So heavy buffing and refinish is established, but the gun just does not appear to be a
factory 2" gun. The front sight is too far forward being all the way to the front of the rib. Front sights are always set back. If a flat blade, it should be pinned, as noted above, the 5th model is forged, but some 2" 5th Model Safeties exist that are pinned. With the buffing, and heave plating, maybe the pin is buffed smooth to the rib? Also, forged front sights on these revolvers have a sight base, but yours does not appear to be anything other than a thin blade set in a slot. Pictures of the top of the blade and the muzzle would help out. Lastly, I do not think that the company ever used the term Bicycle Gun on any 38 caliber Safety revolver.

Thanks Gary, the letter is in post #3. It says... shipped with a blue finish, with a 2-inch barrel and a forged round blade front sight. In SCSW 5th on page 130 there is a photo labeled .38 Safety Hammerless models. One of the guns pictured is a 2-inch labeled 4th (Bicycle).
I can identify with what Will Rogers said, all I know is what I read in the papers. Have included the photos you asked for.

Did you notice that the front sight blade is off center of the rib? It is also installed slightly out of line with the rib. Sorry, but I now am convinced that the barrel is not factory as they would never do such poor work. The crown is also flattened out at the muzzle and not rounded like factory examples. I do not know what to say about the letter other than to say it is wrong. I would check with Don again to see how he obtained the barrel length.
