I have a nickel 38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model with the 3 1/4"
barrel and checkered walnut grips that shipped in 1923
according to the factory letter I have. It's in excellent condition.

The SCSW 4th Edition, page 100 says "checkered walnut grips
scarce, worth premium if original to gun". My question to the
experts is what is this premium worth in terms of a percentage
or dollar amount?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not much help as I look at them as a running change in manufacturing. I'd only guess 5% or $25 whichever was less. I never knowingly paid a premium because of checked wood stocks but I have paid a premium for O/A super condition revolver specimens regardless of the grips.

Pricing is so variable and dependent upon the buyer. A collector who is completing their accumulation of a specific model and needed one would likely pay more than someone who is just interested in the gun.

Mr. Supica and Mr. Nahas are reluctant about pricing primarily because it's generally outdated by the time their tome (see what I did there?) is published.
