First off, welcome to the forum.
What else can you tell us about the revolver? Is it a 5 shot or 6 shot? What length barrel? Adjustable sights or fixed? When you open the cylinder does it say "Mod" with a number inside the crane?

If the full SN off the bottom of the grip frame is 636xx, you have a fairly early production .38 Military & Police, from about 1905. Finding a new hammer will be more difficult than for a newer version of this gun but not impossible. If you can post photos of the gun and a close-up of the hammer that would be helpful. At the bottom of the posts, click Post Reply then under Additional Options click Manage Attachments. You can post photos from there.

That's not a Military and Police, That's a .38/44 Heavy Duty. The serial number puts it's DOB in early 1946. It's much more valuable than an M&P, although the finish isn't the best. Still, it's good one.

If you meant S 636xx is the full SN, I think it is a very early post-WW II Heavy Duty as P&R Fan noted.

I'm not the expert here but wanted to share what little I do know about the hammer for your neat 38/44 Heavy Duty. When you go looking for that replacement hammer you'll be looking for a pre-war style for an N-frame S&W revolver.
The pre-war style hammer was also used from 1946 to 1950 and is NOT interchangeable with the post-war style used after 1950.

Linde is correct. I can not tell from the photo wether or not it is a short stroke or long stroke hammer, but you have to determine that issue before buying one. With an early post war serial number it could be either one. You have a very desirable and sarce nickel 38/44, a 38 caliber revolver built on a 44 frame. Good luck on your search. If you have trouble determining which hammer, you can very carefully remove the side plate and take photos of the lock work. The experts here will then be able to tell you for sure. Go to the smithing section to see how to remove the side plate if you have never done it before. Good luck with a great shooting Smith!

The transition guns hammer has a notch cut in it to compensate for the hammer block and is not exactly like the pre war hammers. Your gun appears to have been refinished because the hammer and trigger have been nickeled and should be case hardened. It is a long action hammer from the photos.
