thinking about a nickel 39-2 that caught my eye! being a revolver guy, having a 1911 and a shield 9mm...is there anything I should look at or know about them, are they different to shoot? are they dependable? what is a ballpark $ for a very nice/ exc. shooter?.....thanks

The 39-2 has a reputation for an absolutely wonderful feel in the hands of the shooter. The nickel examples sit in somewhat of their own little place in the market that is a little more difficult to nail down, price-wise, because the nickel guns really show wear easier than the standard blued guns do.

The 39-2 was produced (roughly) from about 1970 to 1982 and the earlier guns might sometimes object to hollow point ammo, later guns run smoothly with most anything.

There are a certain handful of models that S&W got so very much "RIGHT" that everyone and their brother wanted one, so S&W produced a ton of them. Model 10's, 28's, 17's and for sure... Model 39-2's. More than 300,000 of these guns were produced and ultimately that means that their collectible value rarely gets crazy and countless examples can be found for affordable prices.

Most folks that get a 39 or 39-2 and love S&W pistols don't stop at one. I have three myself! ;)

Oops, ballpark price?

I can't do a great estimate on a nickel example, but a 39-2 with a blued finish, wearing original wood stocks, with one original magazine and no original box is commonly traded in the $400-$450 range in the circles that I travel.

Price on the nickel 39-2 will vary greatly. Here's a pic of one I sold 4/15 for $740. The one I have now is a bit nicer. I've seen some recent sales over $1200 for nice complete packages.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys! they kind of sound like they fit my collection of nice shooters! this one has real nice wood and nickel with a few dings, but very nice overall.. probably $500 -$600...it sure don't look abused....more comments welcomed!

My dad snagged an unfired mint nickel one with the original box about a year or so ago for $800-ish. I think he paid a very fair price because I'm pretty sure that they're going for well over $1k in that shape now. If you can get a good shooter grade for $500-$600, I'd say jump on it. The blue 39-2's are going for more than now that in my area.
