I searched under the smithing section and did not find anything.

I know that a 5906 spurred hammer will work on a 3913, and that you have to replace the strut with the shorter one. What I need to know is, does the hammer drop in or does it have to be fitted?

Still thinking of putting a spurred hammer on my 3913. Has anyone done this? How hard is it to replace the hammer strut? The one that comes on the new hammer is to long, at least that is what I was told.

No replacement auto hammer can be counted on to be 100% drop in.
Many will need some adjusting to insure proper and safe operation, AND a proper trigger pull.

The S&W hammers are pretty good about fitting right in, but if it doesn't you will need to know how to fit it correctly.
Its the idea of "drop in" hammers and sears that need no fitting that turns up as rotten trigger pulls, or a hammer that follows the slide....or worse.

Ok, maybe I will just leave it alone. I do not want any issues.

C/O: About 10 years ago, while I was professionally gunsmithing, I had a 'run' of 3913 owners wanting thumb-piece hammers. I bought several 5906 hammers and short struts thru Brownell's and changed them out. Every one dropped in without any adjustments on my part and with acceptable trigger pulls; passing all safety checks. I wouldn't hesitate.
