I'm trying to get my hands on a 3913LS for the wife and noticed that some versions have a black trigger and hammer while other versions have a stainless trigger and hammer.

Can anyone tell me which is older? If there's any difference? Does it really matter other than preference?

Thanks.

The black trigger and hammer are later. IIRC they started showing up in S&W 3rd generation autos between 1994 and 1995. The black parts are Metal Injection Molding (MIM).

This is the first type, not sure if the parts are stainless or flash chromed.

The MIM parts we're on the later production guns. I can not tell a difference between the two, both types go "bang" when you pull the trigger.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I guess it comes down to personal preference then.

ColbyBruce - I have the one in your top picture and just prefer the trigger and hammer matching to the slide. And I changed out the grip to the grey grip. Hahaha. I may change it back.

My search continues for a 3913LS with the trigger and hammer matching the slide.

Thanks again.

My 3913 has the black trigger and I bought it new around 1995. It has been a great gun and I have never had any problems with it. My instructor said it was the best shooting gun, right out of the box, that he had ever seen. You can't go wrong with a 3913.

Don't rule out a 3953. It's double action only which is a great feature for a female shooter if she is a novice. It's a great gun with a couple of less things to worry about.

The 3953 is definitely worth a look. Robertson's Trading Post had some on Guns America - police trade-ins - and they are good values. I bought one that eventually went to one of my nieces.
This brings up a factor I consider a plus for all families with tykes. The 3rd gens have the magazine safety that prevents firing the gun without an inserted mag. The gun can be left on the mantel with a round chambered and no magazine. All magazines are kept under lock and key except for those worn by my niece and her husband. If an intruder appears, all that needs to be done to put the gun into action is to insert the mag. no racking the slide, just pull the trigger. All other guns in the home have trigger locks. My niece's sister so liked the idea she hornswoggled a 3913 LadySmith from her favorite Uncle Tom and she and her husband use the same system for their house gun.
As far as the MIM parts for the fire control, some have opined that they have smoother pulls than the flash chromed. I've shot extensively with both types and can't tell the difference, but that may just be me.
