I just picked up a 3953 to replace my 3914 for carry. The 53 does not have a mag disconnect. Are they all like this? I like the disconnect, can it be added?

Both of mine have mag disconnect, so I suspect you'll find the problem under your rear sight. There's a plunger and spring that should be there, probably removed by previous owner. Hope that is all there is to it. Others, with greater wisdom will probably suggest other things to check ! :) Welcome aboard.

As the slide is etched with the firing warning my choice would be to leave as is.

Ditto - you can probably sell it for a premium to someone who dislikes the disconnect.

To be fair, I'm in a similarly conflicted place on a 5906TSW which was shipped with a "spring loaded decocking lever" - I really want a "normal" manual safety, but mine has the laser-etched warning about returning to Fire and everything. Also has the best 3rd gen trigger I can ever remember pulling!

I'll live with it and may still come across a 3954 with the disconnect. It was my first choice but the only one i could find was almost twice the price of this one. I did not know the 3953 came both ways. I would change it if i could.

The pistol was probably made that way for a law enforcement contract. It is interesting that the frame, slide and barrel are etched with the serial number in that fashion.

Lock your slide back and look under it at the rear. There should be two plungers on each side of the disconnector notch. The medal one is the firing pin block, the black or white nylon one is your mag disconnect. If the nylon one isn't there but there is a hole then it can be replaced. If no hole across from the firing pin block then it came from the factory that way. But as has been mention it should be laser etched under the ejection port "Capable of firing without magazine"

I have been removing them for the past 30 years in all of my S&W autos. There is no other quality defensive auto for sale that has one, and that training factor alone makes me remove it. The FBI specifically ordered their 1076s without it.

If it really bothers you, sell that gun and find another with it - they are out there.
