I was referring to the 7448 Ultra fine. I use it for the final finish. BTW, after a little use it becomes even finer. I use it with oil.

Curious if anyone else has tried to find these locally at a Lowes. Lowes carries seemingly identical 3M pads in the sanding section but with different product codes. I tried cross-referencing them but came up empty handed.

So I called 3M directly and they cross-referenced their product codes. Apparently light grey 7448 is the industrial product number, light grey 10144 is the exact same product branded for consumers; both replace 00 steel wool. Likewise, white 7445 is the industrial product number for 10199 for consumers and both replace 0000 steel wool. I found both consumer versions commonly available at Lowes for $6 each whereas the industrial versions were much harder to find locally and were more expensive (and there are a ton of hardware, auto parts and industrial supply shops locally too).

Thanks to all of you who added so much specific data and info to this thread. I can now intelligently stock up my shelf with pad grades I'm most likely to need. Fortunately my younger brother works at the local HD, so I have a guide!

Thanks to all for the clarifications. This was is a very informative post. I've wondered about gray pads for quite some time. Now I know exactly which ones to buy.
