I need this like a 3rd hole in my head! But it is a Rem.700 action, reworked by Kelbly and one of their heavy varmint barrels. Laminated Beavertail stock in dark browns. I haven't weighed the trigger yet but feels like 20 to 24 ounces. Will have to try some various loads and see how it shoots.

I checked the old scope pile in the basement and have a Veri-X III 6.5-20 AO Target scope and sunshade. I have a few Harris Bipods around too, so I'm good to go to the range Friday or Saturday (if the weather holds out :) )

Are there varmints at the range,,??

or do you really need to go to a bean field??

Last time I was at the State range, there was a nice crop of ground hogs living along the access road and on the 200 yard berm. If you have a current hunting license you are allowed to shoot as many as you wish. Without the paper, it's about a $75 fine, court costs, and you probably lost at least one weekday!

REM Varmint Rifle

I have that same Vari X III scope on an early 1980’s REM 700 Varmint in 223.
That scope is still one of my favorites and compares well to more modern scopes. I have a Jewel trigger set about 6-8 oz so that is a great package.
Enjoy your custom Remington. Willyboy

Tird times a charm or just like collecting 223 varment rifles ?

I have one bolt action in 223 , a savage stevens 200 but I did buy and bed a boyds stock I did some tuning to the stock trigger at first for 1.5lb pull weight but not as sharp as I would like so a few years later I added a Rifle Basic SAV-2 assembly a few years ago that is an adjustable from 4oz to 3lbs and that's a very good upgrade . Barrel with is a 1-9 twist so no heavy bullets . Spent some time using kreiger's barrel break in method on the bore and maybe I got lucky as its a 1/2moa rifle with several factory loads best was Georgia arms 55gr hornady v-max . Scope is an older now burris black diamond 4-16 on it .

Kelbly made some nice rifles. I used to drive up to their range in North Lawrence, OH each Memorial day weekend to watch part of the SuperShoot.

My Varminters were done up by Fred Sinclair. A nice Ruger 77 22-250 with Pillar bedding and a Hart barrel that I put a Canjar set trigger in and a very nice Rem 40Xbr in .22 BR that he pillar bedded.

I picked up a Remmy 700PSS in .223 about 20 years ago for pretty cheap.

I put a 4x16 Bushnell scope on it and get under 1"
groups with M855 ball and down to almost 1/2" groups with
handloads and commercial match loads at 100 yds.

Longest shot I've taken was 400+ yards.

Lotsa fun and cheap shooting!

Sounds like a nice package Ivan.

I like heavy barreled rifles.I got mine before the 223 became popular. I have a 222 HB Browning Safari grade made in Belgium on a Sako short action, and a Ruger 77V in 22-250. The Ruger has a vintage 6-18 Redfield, and the 222 has a 4-12 vintage Redfield.

Neither one has been fired in 40-45 years

Enjoy yours!!

Many years ago I picked up a lightly used Rem.700 PSS in .223 Rem in the HS Precision stock. I also mounted a Leupold VX-III 6.5 - 20x scope that I sent back to Premier to have a Mil-Dot reticle installed. I have no idea how many hundreds of prairie dogs have been taken with this rifle but it was the primary rifle used at least 75% of the time. The Rem 700/.223 Rem combo with proper handloads turned out to be a great combo. After I returned home from my first trip to SD I immediately purchased a Rem 700 SS Varmint fluted in .22-250 on closeout and installed another Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x with a Mil-Dot reticle, another combo that put a lot of prairie dogs into flight. My heavy wind prairie dog rifle was a Carolina Precision Rifle custom Rem 700 fluted HB in Rem 25-06 with 100gr Nosler Ballistic Tips with a Burris 8-32x scope mounted (way too much magnification). All 3 rifles have Shilen triggers set at 2 1/2lbs.

I had that same scope on a 700VS Remington, and Leupold will make up and supply a custom elevation turret 'TUNED" to your specific load. You just need to supply them with all the data: Velocity, bullet & weight, ballistic Coefficient, altitude, etc. Should be listed on their web site.

Makes things easy, read distance with range finder, and dial it in and shoot. I've taken Prairie Dogs out past 500 yards with my 22-250.
