3rd gen rear sight questions

A Few Random Thoughts

Assuming you have good close up vision, with the pistol in hand it is easy to see the clear vial containing the radioactive tritium inlet in the center of the white dots. If all you see is white paint, that's all you've got.

By memory only, the adjustables and simple fixed sight were carried forward from 2nd generation pistols then Novaks replaced the earlier fixed sights after a few years.

Some of the economy series 3rd Generation pistols, including the Chief Specials and IIRC the 910 and 915 had inexpensive plastic fixed rear sights. Glock fans don't seem to mind plastic sights but they would not be my first choice.

Gun parts kits are often auctioned on Gun Broker. They mostly come from guns destroyed by governmental agencies. Watch patiently and you'll likely get a kit as inexpensively as you'll find a slide.

Not meaning to hijack the thread. I have the Novak
regular sights on my 4516-2. I want to dill the white dot out, all the way thru and make fiber optic sights. Anyone know if the sight is hardened steel. None of my drill bits can make a hole.

Different as in "won't fit or work correctly on a 5906" frame, or different as in "doesn't look like a 5906" slide?

(I appreciated your other tips on model numbers to search for.)

Refering to your original question - a 910 slide does not have the sights you are looking for (nor does it look like a 5906 slide) whereas a 915 slide does.

See this thread for much 910/5906 discussion - http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...ls/400134-i-wish-s-w-had-made-model-915s.html

Gen 3 sights can be very difficult to remove if you don't have a sight pusher. Also, once relamped, you don't really want to install with a punch and hammer. Consider sending them the slide. Insure it for enough to replace it.

Oddly enough, a Glock sight tool works on everything smaller,
if you take the time to cut a few rubber spacer shims...

Well, I'm happy as a clam. Found two 915 slide assemblies on eBay ($49 and $149) and bought one (not the overpriced one) this morning.

It'll be the platform I'll use for my railed 5906 (keeping the original SS slide with Novak rear sight unmolested). The completed 5906/915 will serve as a low light home gun (with laser on the rail) and a steel shootin' range gun (with red dot on the rail). Here's what my local gunsmith/machinist will do to prepare the slide for the rail:

On a related question -- on sight #2, who makes the tritium inserts? My 1076 night sights are very dim (bought it that way) and I would like to send the slide in to have them re-lamped.

I contacted S&W regarding replacement of the vials for their factory installed Tritium sights. They instructed me to contact Trijicon. Trijicon will replace the S&W vials for $57. Your choice of vial color combination, orange, yellow or green at no extra cost. Go to Trijicon.com and fill out an RMA and send the slide in.
