I realize that for most here this is not important info, (or even interesting.) This is just for those that have been waiting.

I received a Factory Letter for my 40 Recon today. There were 200 total produced. I found it interesting that both my 9 and 40 Recon's went to RSR then back to S&W. Strange that RSR requested these specific builds then couldn't sell them. I wonder if the 45 Recon's were the same? I'm not going to get a Letter to find out.

If anyone still bumps into Chip let him know that 200 was it. At one time he was very interested but all our interests change. He still might like to find out.

I have a 45 Recon. Info was scarce enough that it didn't deserve much attention in the S&W book I had.

Would've liked to have info on it but wasn't going to lose any sleep over it. I'm sure it also was sent to RSR.

Yes it was "imagined" by and delivered to RSR. There were 603 total of the different 45 Recons requested by RSR.

I have to admit that the protruding/comped barrels of the 40's and 45's are ridiculous. That's why a few have been cut back. Maybe someone at RSR thought it would be a great marketing/sales idea. But the non-protruding/non-comped 9 Recons are really practical pistols. I'm surprised they didn't sell better. (Back THEN.) I'd be surprised to find out any of the Shorty's were sent back from Lew Horton because they didn't sell.

I've been active in this forum discussing PC semiautomatic pistols for a good while now, so I find it interesting.

But I cannot think of anything we've discussed here that relates to anyone who calls themself "Chip." So what's that about and why wouldn't Chip care today?

Chip is an authentic Smith bottom feeder fan, he lives here in NC. I own two guns purchased from him. Back when 18 was active here, they went back and forth frequently.

I know life got in the way of him actively participating here but his posts were always informative and valuable. He was always curious about the history of unusual and small production guns.

Any pictures available for those of us who do not know what these are?

This image is of both the Shorty's and the Recon's.

It's interesting, (at least to me,) to compare the outwardly obvious differences. Wonder why the 40 Recons didn't have the "scalloped" slide? Guess I could always send it to guzzitaco. :D

I have owned a Shorty 9, 40, 45 and a 9 & 45 Recon. Never all at the same time. They have come and gone but the 40 Recon isn't going anywhere.

Cool! Anyone know what the black finish is? Same as used on the 69 small parts?

Thanks Jim! I've printed the letter and added it to my 40 RECON! I have the 9 RECON & 45 RECON as well!

Cheers!!!
David

Hey guys, I just joined this forum. I was looking for info on the Recon 40. There is very little out there about these. I bought it with some other hunting equipment. Couldn't find comps on Gunbroker. What's the resale value on one of these? # RRS0131
Just the pistol and one mag. No box.
