40 S&W +P ammo

There is no SAMMI spec for Plus-P ammunition in the .40 S&W cartridge. Pressure-wise, it is already loaded to it's upper limit minus a safety margin.

You would be pushing it to get a 165 grainer up to 1400 fps in the bigger, longer 10mm Auto. You can't do it in the .40 without using magic powder or grossly exceding safe pressures.

My load book show a 155 LSWC top speed of 1158 and 175 LSWC At 990. I would not over load the 40 stay with your book and be safe. The 10MM will not get the vol that you want from the 40. Top VOL 10mm 165 LSWC Is 1334 from my load book.

+1, plus one, what has already been said .40 is already loaded hot.
Double Tap ammo loads can get you close with a 125gr.
Think you would need a longslide barrel or carbine to get that push. DoubleTap Ammunition

Just for the fun of it... (from quickload)

And whatever you do DO NOT USE THIS DATA IT WILL BLOW YOUR GUN UP!

With a 40, and a 165 grn RNFP to 1.135 col

At 54,836 psi (about twice what a 40 can do) a large amount of bullseye will do 1418 fps.

At 53,355psi and 123% capacity you can get to 1419 with unique

At 48,049 psi with 131% capacity you get 1400 with 2400.

Bottom line, can't be done with the 40 in a 5" barrel.

Now with the 10mm,
At 38,437 psi (only a bit too high) you can get 1411 with 2400.
At 36,103 psi (bit too high) you get 1408 with aa7

Even with a 10mm you are pushing the pressure to make 1400 with a 165 and 5" barrel.

Buffalo Bore ammo dose make 40+p 155gr hp @1100fps

Why do people want to "magnum-ize" standard cartridges? If you need magnum performance in a 40 caliber cartridge, why not get a 41 magnum? Do you really need/require a cartridge that develops 1,400 + FPS Muzzle Velocity? Hey, the 500 S&W Magnum develops 1,800 + MV, how about one of those? I work with a guy that shot a 4" model and now has problems with his right hand. Can't even shoot for fun & pleasure now.

I don't own magnums any more, that's my choice. I shoot for fun & enjoyment these days. I just bought 2-40 caliber S&W's, and with all the "Kabooms" that happen with this caliber-I was afraid to try/buy one. Then I had the opportunity to shoot a few, and it wasn't so bad. I shoot 38 Special (no +P), 9mm (no +P), 40 S&W (no +P) and 45 acp (again-no +P). If I NEEDED more than any of these calibers offered, I would look to the magnums available-up to 44, as that is MY limit.

Sorry for the rant, I just don't get it? I'll leave now....

I get 1240 fps with a 155 XTP and Power Pistol in a 4" barrel. That is the absolute best I can get with standard pressure .40 S&W. If I need more than that I take my .357 Magnum! And honestly, with a 4" .357 I can't get 1400 with a 158. 158 gr LSWC I can achieve 1341 fps in a 4"er. That's still short of what you're seeking.

You may want to explore .41 or better yet, .44 Magnum if you require that kind of power.

You can safely get 1400 with a 135 Nosler with Longshot. The original data lists velocities faster than that but they have since backed off of the faster data. I have only used these loads in a fully supported chamber 4006 and 411. I would not fire them in my 4013 or a Glock.
