I hear on the internet that the .40 S&W is dead.....so, where are all of the heaps of .40's that no one wants? They are not anywhere here in Montana.

I would be very happy to buy any 3rd gen .40's for next to nothing if no one wants them. That would include the M&P's that I guess no one wants either.

Had no idea that the .40 would be so short lived........

It's primarily the result of people following City, State, and Federal Law Enforcement agencies like the FBI that are moving away from the 40S&W. Just like in my State, the Texas Department of Public Safety (State Troopers) are also switching to the 9mm from the .357Sig. In reality as those of us that know. It's more of a cost thing and the fact of a lot of newer recruits that we're seeing entering into todays LE tending to handle a lighter round better. I personally like the .40 but then again I also like the 45ACP. Winds of change.....

There are literally tons of used .40's right now at rock bottom prices. Get a cheap FFL xfer and order away.

They are not hard to find if you look around. Here in the NE, sales of 40 cal (anything) is so slow these days that the shop I work in has all but stopped taking them in trade. The ones we have, generally sit there till they have a birthday unless we give them away.

I myself still own a few but won't be buying any more. Police departments are largely following suit.

I have a 4053 on consignment at a local shop. Been there 6 months next week at $475....Still there today.....

The .40 S&W should never have been born.

But then, the .45 ACP shouldn't have either, and it's still going strong after a century.

Between the SIGs, Glocks and S&W Shields I have bought since the 40 died
I must have missed the notice not to buy them. Of course the 22's, 23's, 226's
and 229's haven't worked at all and the Shields as everyone knows are
Junk.

If anyone wants to give me their 40's just PM me I will make them go away
for you.

I am not a 40 guy, but I could have bought a LOT of nice guns at good prices over the last few years if I bought 40 caliber.

...If anyone wants to give me their 40's just PM me I will make them go away for you.

Me too. I'll take empty brass, as well. :)

I haven't been looking for bargains on pistols as I already have more than I need, and I'm not planning to sell them. I load .40s like they are mini-.45s. 165-180 grain lead bullets at about 800-850 FPS with Win 231. Pleasant to shoot, easy on the guns, and great paper-killers. Rough on tin cans and clay pigeons, too! I couldn't care less about the cost of self-defense ammo. Never shoot the stuff.

A 4.25", 1.0, .40 was my first M&P. I sort of inherited it, didn't set out to have a .40. I'm more of a 1911 guy. But I like it, it has some power and more capacity than a 1911. Put the Apex parts in it which made it much better. And I shoot it pretty well. Since then I've got a 4" .45, 2.0 and just ordered a 4.25 9mm. The .45 because I like the caliber and the 9 because it's cheaper to shoot and everyone else on the planet has one. I want to see what I've been missing. I won't sell the .40. It's worth more to me than what I would get for it. But I'm not looking for any more, even as cheap as they're selling for. I have no interest in the small Shields, 380s or sub-compacts. That's what J frames are for.

I'm a Johnny-come-lately when it comes to the .40 S&W. I just bought my first, a 4006 in excellent condition, a couple of months ago.

I bashed it when it first appeared, but now, after owning this and reloading for it, I don't understand why there's anything to dislike.

Ever since the FBI announced they were going back to the 9x19 people have been proclaiming that the 40 is a dead cartridge.

Is it really dead? No

Will it die? Yes, probably about the same time phased plasma rifles become the standard.

Do I have one? No, but if the price is right I might jump into the 40 pool.

Funny how some gunners are like leaves on a river.......They go where ever the current takes them. The 40 has been on top for 26 years. Only now marketing and "noise" says its obsolete and you need a smaller pipsqueek gun. Marketing sells......Study how our 45 did against the keiser's pipsqueek 9mm in WWII. Now it seems our manly man can't handle the weight or recoil of anything bigger that a 380/9.

I enjoy loading and shooting the 40s and being able to switch to .357 Sig is nice too. I agree a lot of folks are drinking the smaller caliber kool-aid, I just had a local shooter asking me to trade him some 9mm brass for 40 brass, of course having tons of 9mm brass I was happy to oblige. My favorite caliber is still 45acp but I heard years ago that it was dead too along with 38sp. Marketing.

The .40 S&W cartridge is practically dead here in metro Atlanta. The handguns chambered for it collect dust on shelves and most shops refuse to take one in trade. Glocks and Springfields in .45 GAP are dead. Lots of gun shops have LE trade-ins in these calibers and thus do not want any more.

I personally like the cartridge and own four Sigs chambered for it. I have given my son three; a BHP, Sig SP 2022, and a Walther PPS. Since the end of May I have been fortunate enough to buy several .40 pistols dirt cheap and pass them on to fellow fishermen.

The Sig P250 and SP2022 in .40 can be found used for $300.00 or less around here, and so can the S&W SD and Shield, and Walther PPS. Ammo from shot shells to heavy hardcast are available and not too expensive. It and the handguns that are available make good woods guns.

Companies that sell a lot of Law enforcement trade in guns have the .40s in Glock, Sig, Beretta, and S&W at only about 10-15% cheaper than their same 9m/m guns. That's a long way from dead and the 9m/m ammo is under 9 bucks a box at Walmart so that's the main reason it's so popular in my opinion. I don't need any more defensive semi-auto handguns but I will sure start buying those LE trade-in 40s if they become 40 or 50 percent cheaper!

I have 2 40S&W autos. A 4013TSW and a 411. I like them both. I also have 2 .45Autos. A 645 and a .45 Shield. I like them also. I shoot them all.

I like the .40, but I don't feel the need to have more than one. Maybe I'll see a deal on a 2.0 that I can't refuse. I like the .45 even more. The only advantage to 9mm that I see is cheaper ammo if you're buying factory stuff. Anything the 9 can do, the bigger bore stuff can do it better.

.40s aren't dead, They just made to many small polymer guns for people to hate and flood the used market with. Also glad the .40 is cheap on 3rd gens since my CHP is going to be $300 cheaper than my 9 TSW.

40 has not died . I've seen them everywhere. Maybe in Montana they are harder to find? not sure why that is?
I got a Ruger P94DAO( former LEO pistol) for $295 last year. I 've had a Ruger Police Carbine (PC4) from 1997. They share the same magazines.
I am very happy with the performance of my 40 caliber weapons. I thnk a lot of people feel the same. 40 wont die !

A LE supply shop had three Kel-Tec Sub2000 carbines in .40 S&W that were T&E guns from a local SO for nearly a year. One of my former co-workers bought all three of them at $200.00 each. I was skeptical of those things, but the one he loaned me ran fine and was accurate. This would be a good companion to a .40 Glock handgun.

The .40 S&W is dead . . . wow, who would have thought it.

I guess I have to get rid .40s: Beretta Px4, CZ 75B, Glock 22, S&W 4003, 4006, 4013, 4014, Sig P229, P229R DAK, and my .40 S&W barrel for my G31 . . . NOT !
