I hear on the internet that the .40 S&W is dead.....so, where are all of the heaps of .40's that no one wants? They are not anywhere here in Montana.

I would be very happy to buy any 3rd gen .40's for next to nothing if no one wants them. That would include the M&P's that I guess no one wants either.

Had no idea that the .40 would be so short lived........

It's primarily the result of people following City, State, and Federal Law Enforcement agencies like the FBI that are moving away from the 40S&W. Just like in my State, the Texas Department of Public Safety (State Troopers) are also switching to the 9mm from the .357Sig. In reality as those of us that know. It's more of a cost thing and the fact of a lot of newer recruits that we're seeing entering into todays LE tending to handle a lighter round better. I personally like the .40 but then again I also like the 45ACP. Winds of change.....

There are literally tons of used .40's right now at rock bottom prices. Get a cheap FFL xfer and order away.

They are not hard to find if you look around. Here in the NE, sales of 40 cal (anything) is so slow these days that the shop I work in has all but stopped taking them in trade. The ones we have, generally sit there till they have a birthday unless we give them away.

I myself still own a few but won't be buying any more. Police departments are largely following suit.

I have a 4053 on consignment at a local shop. Been there 6 months next week at $475....Still there today.....

The .40 S&W should never have been born.

But then, the .45 ACP shouldn't have either, and it's still going strong after a century.

Between the SIGs, Glocks and S&W Shields I have bought since the 40 died
I must have missed the notice not to buy them. Of course the 22's, 23's, 226's
and 229's haven't worked at all and the Shields as everyone knows are
Junk.

If anyone wants to give me their 40's just PM me I will make them go away
for you.

I am not a 40 guy, but I could have bought a LOT of nice guns at good prices over the last few years if I bought 40 caliber.

Me too. I'll take empty brass, as well. :)

I haven't been looking for bargains on pistols as I already have more than I need, and I'm not planning to sell them. I load .40s like they are mini-.45s. 165-180 grain lead bullets at about 800-850 FPS with Win 231. Pleasant to shoot, easy on the guns, and great paper-killers. Rough on tin cans and clay pigeons, too! I couldn't care less about the cost of self-defense ammo. Never shoot the stuff.

A 4.25", 1.0, .40 was my first M&P. I sort of inherited it, didn't set out to have a .40. I'm more of a 1911 guy. But I like it, it has some power and more capacity than a 1911. Put the Apex parts in it which made it much better. And I shoot it pretty well. Since then I've got a 4" .45, 2.0 and just ordered a 4.25 9mm. The .45 because I like the caliber and the 9 because it's cheaper to shoot and everyone else on the planet has one. I want to see what I've been missing. I won't sell the .40. It's worth more to me than what I would get for it. But I'm not looking for any more, even as cheap as they're selling for. I have no interest in the small Shields, 380s or sub-compacts. That's what J frames are for.

I'm a Johnny-come-lately when it comes to the .40 S&W. I just bought my first, a 4006 in excellent condition, a couple of months ago.

I bashed it when it first appeared, but now, after owning this and reloading for it, I don't understand why there's anything to dislike.

Ever since the FBI announced they were going back to the 9x19 people have been proclaiming that the 40 is a dead cartridge.

Is it really dead? No

Will it die? Yes, probably about the same time phased plasma rifles become the standard.

Do I have one? No, but if the price is right I might jump into the 40 pool.
