4006 Limited — beyond the grail?

Trail for the Grail

I remember seeing the 4006 Limited for the first time and I said it's not for me. At the time I was probably on the look for a few PC revolvers. Over time my opinion of this pistol had changed as a few were popping up, so the search began. I lost a few auctions and checked the forum later then I normally do in the morning to see I missed out on another one. I'm happy with the one I ended up with.

Joedegs, yours is a special one (some way, somehow?) because it wears the PCZ serial prefix. Do you know any back story to this pistol?

I was told, The PCZ Serial Prefix Is Known As The PROTOTYPE Frame Serial Prefixed Used By The Performance Center. These Examples Are Rarely Found Outside The Factory. Excellent Example....Very Few PCZ Serial 4006 Examples In The "WILD"

I don't have a story for it yet...Very possible that it will be the first gun I have lettered. Though I do believe it once belonged to a fellow forum member.

I absolutely agree and I'll add that of the 9 that I own, 8 of them are high grade but less than mint and I love them for exactly what you said, I shoot 'em. The one that I do have that is dead mint doesn't get shot.

I'd rather pay a little less and shoot them, but when the price is right, I'll buy a mint one also.

So, which link was it now that had the boobs on it? ;)

I wasn't kidding. I didn't see pictures I saw links I clicked the first one and it was a woman in a sweater with her boobs sticking out

PC 5906 DAO

So slightly off topic since its a 9mm, but a cousin to the subject 4006...which one of you guys ended up with this weirdo? :) Gander Mountain had several PC guns that were apparently sold off from the factory (had product codes starting with 6 and several were PCZ serials. I bought more than one and ultimately passed on this thing for about $900 if I recall correctly. Should have bought it for investment purposes, but you can't have them all!

I don't really agree. If you haven't shopped for some of these elite level handguns you may not have much frame of reference of where the market is. If you are actively seeking one and you see where someone just got a hold of one, naturally you'll want to hear some numbers. If you happen to own one and you've considered letting it go, you might benefit from a current data point. So the question is relevant.

I think it would be rude to expect or demand a direct answer, but not rude to ask.

For me, in 2019, it was the right number. 2-3-4 years ago and I would have even paid more. My budget has changed in the last 1-2 years, as have my "wants." I plan to sell this pistol... in about 25 years from now. :D And that is absolutely the truth.

It matters not the item cost irreguardless of market value. Plain rude and nosey. If the OP doesn't put it in his post. It's NONE of anybody's business.

I have no problem at all with wear on a gun, car, motorcycle etc... I use my stuff and safe queens will never be in my safe :-)

New info to add.

"The PCZ prefix was used as a generic prefix for anything that needed a serial number but was not associated with any special order. There are both pistols and revolvers floating around with this prefix. The official prototype prefix was XPX and very few of these made it out to the world."

That's great info and I appreciate it.

Who gets credit for the quote?

Im kinda surprised the 5" 5906 has been on the auction block for so long and not sold. I know its high priced, but I believe less than 50 or 60 of those were made. Seems like the PCZ prefix was used on alot of the early or short run PC guns. Shorty 40, shorty and 6906 compact all have that prefix as does a much later short run 4566.

4006 Limited Export

I had picked up this 4006 Limited PC a few months ago, finally got some time to get a few pictures. It spend some time in Europe.

Yes, a limited wearing wood grips. There's a pic of the import proofs and the barrel was lasered, I think it says Hammerborger?? But not sure. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Interesting! So first off, this isn't a WISCHO exclusive but there is certainly a good chance that WISCHO handled the original import, at least it would make sense that WISCHO handled it.

And WISCHO Performance Center pistols quite often had these Nill wood stocks on them. And you probably already know... but outside of the 952/945 series, S&W Performance Center pistols don't even have screw bushings on their frames, I have always assumed that WISCHO handled this modification since WISCHO guns are literally the only ones that ever had Nill stocks.

The laser etching on the barrel is interesting... pictures almost indicate that the original ".40 S&W PERFORMANCE" is not shown on the top of the barrel hood?

The slide stop is also quite curious, with that hole in it. It almost looks as if it were modified, though I cannot fathom why it would be modified in that way.

It's a beauty!
