A while ago I posted about my 4006 spontainously dropping the decock/safety after firing a couple rounds. S&W sent new springs but didn't cure the problem. The told me to send it back to them.
Got a call from a man named Mark this morning and the had been working on the pistol and determined the slide was out of specs. They didn't have a replacement slide with adjustable sights like mine had. He asked me if it was ok if they replaced the slide with a fixed sight slide and then top it off with some nice night sights.
He said the pistol was made in 1993 before they started using CNC milling and this slide made it through without anyone catching it. Seeing It wasn't fired for almost 20 years the issued didn't pop up.
SO I'm overjoyed. Night sights!! I have several revolvers and pistols with adjustable sights and have never adjusted them anyway so big grins from me. Gets shipped back probably "Friday"
fastbolt thanks for all your help on this and ironically you were right about the slide being out of specs. I'm impressed.
thanks again.

That's cool that they are taking care of it for you. And night sights...Score! If you don't mind a question, what are they charging you for the repair? Or are you the original owner?:D:cool:

No charge. I'm not the original owner. The pistol was purchased in 1993. The man died shortly afterward and it wasn't fired. It was still wrapped in the box when I purchased it from his widow years ago. I put it in the the gun safe and it just sat for years until a couple months ago. I started shooting it and I ran into the problem mentioned in my other post. Mark at Smith and Wesson said they would do all of this for no charge. They even sent a Fedx tag so shipping was free also. Gotta love it.

Congrats on the upgrade to your 4006! :)

A new slide and night sights on a 4006 is ALOT better than getting stuck with a new M&P40 in exchange for the out of spec 4006!!

I'm really surprised they did that for you rather than just try to get you to take a "new" gun! Enjoy that fine 4006! Regards 18DAI

That is excellent. I love to hear stuff like that about a company I put a lot of stock in. It's always nice to see that one's trust is not misplaced. I too own a 4006 with the adjustable rear sight, a Cali Parks with the bear on the slide. I'd hate to lose that bear, but if I were offered a deal like yours, I believe I could live with it!:D:cool:

Timn8er if your CSP gun is anything like mine I don't expect there will be any problems. Who ever work on these guns was an 'Expert' . My trigger is as smooth silk and the operation has been perfect in 1500 rds since I got it . I had never been a fan of the .40 until buying this 4006 , now every time I go to shoot it's with me. Oh, the bear wouldn't bother me as much as the loss of the adj sight. I hope the CSP is happy with there new M&P 40s and Mike I'm glad they fixed yours and did not offer you a M&P.

I was tickled to death. In the short time I shot it I put probably 200 rds through it and just shot balls out with it. With the nite sights it will sit on the night stand instead of my sig P238. Can't wait to get it.

PS now the search for spare mags. I only have two. This is coming from someone who has at least five of everything.

Good to hear it was resolved. Congrats.

Once you mentioned that normal function couldn't be restored with the replacement/repair spring, it seemed likely the slide needed to be (and would be) checked for proper spec (machined area contacted by the body plunger head).

If I had to guess, I'd not be surprised that your 4006 was repaired using an "extra" older upper assembly that was still on-hand in Pistol Repair. Adding night sights to it would be a simple chore, and a nice touch in the way of customer service. They probably (and reasonably) felt bad you ended up with a gun that had a tolerance/spec issue that ought to have been caught before it left the factory.

If it had involved the frame, or they hadn't had an available upper assembly, they probably would have offered you a M&P 40 ... but in the long run, it was a win-win to keep a S&W 3rd gen customer happy, and save the cost of a M&P 40 (in heavy demand for LE at the moment), by being able to repair your 4006 with a slide assembly that was available. :) Just a guess, though.

Here's your Bear's cousin!

I've sold plenty of M&P,s while working for Bass Pro and thought fairly highly of them. Good customer feedback. BUT it isn't a 4006 by a long shot. As I said. I never needed to change the adjustable much on any pistol that I've had with it. Much happier with nite sights. FedEx just called and it will be delievered tomorrow. The wife will have to sign for it as I have to travel to Minnapolis to judge a gymnastic meet.
Thanks again fastbolt and the rest you all.

Now if I can just find at least two more mags.

Pics will be posted, right?

Shot the 4006 today. Fixed nite sites. Shot three mags and no decocking issue. Also noted that the pistol came back from S&W with a mag. Didn't send any with it. Gotta love that. Shot to the left and had to drift the rear sight to the left a bit. Right on now. Does it really matter if you move the front sight or the rear?

Moving the front or the rear sight does not make a difference, the direction moved does. Enjoy your 4006 it is a great gun. I am glad they took care of your 3rd gen, it should last forever.

S&W customer service it top notch, the more threads I read the more it is proven time and time again. They have sent me several parts over the years at no charge, part of the reason I keep buying their products. Well the looks and performance trump the free stuff, but you get what I mean.

However I miss the days when you could go to their indoor range rent a gun and if you buy that model that day your range time was reduced off the price of the gun! Range time, fifty rounds of free enticement, and walk out the door with your new gun, how do you beat that. Another advantage was that you could fire your new gun to check for any flaws.

Been a while since I posted but have put about ten boxes through the 006 and had to twink the sights abit but now it's right on. Also picked up a fourth mag from a gun show for $10. The guy had no idea what it fit and I told him I was gambling it fitting anything I owned so he asked $10 bucks. Last Wed I shot one mag and had three big holes at 25 feet. I shoot it better than my Sig Navy Mk 25.

And another happy S&W person. They do set things right. Glad your happy. Do you have any reservations about loosing the night sites over the adjustable sights?
