I finally found some. I had searched the local gun shops and most looked at me like I was asking for a ford that was worth buying! Went to the gun show and found 3 boxes. One of winchester 175 gr. and two remington with 210 gr. I had alreayd shot some of the remingtons so I just bought the winchesters and also got ahold of some .41 brass. 75 brass for 8 bucks. I dind't think that was too bad, but what do I know I just got interested in reloading.
Anyone shot the 175 grain winchesters? What is your opinion?

They're probably the best "people" round made for this caliber. They do over 1200 fps from a 4" tube, they're accurate, and they're controllable. The STHP is old tech, but no one says it doesn't work in this round. I have always kept 175-gr STHPs around for my .41 Mags, and I probably always will. It's the only non-handload that I carry in the guns (I use handloads for every other imaginable use).

Okay, here's more precise data from my 4" Model 57 (at 5950 feet above sea level, 78° F):

175-gr Winchester Silvertip hollowpoints
average 1254 fps, spread 23.94, deviation 9.48

So, as you can see, they're quite powerful and very consistent. The power level appears to have been calibrated with some reason, with a consideration for the target being a human or small animal aggressor - these are not so likely to blow out the back of a burglar and into the neighbor's house as are full-power .41 Magnum loadings, but they've got plenty of horsepower for doing what's intended.

BTW, on your Remingtons - they're more "real" .41 Mag loads - a little faster and heavier. Out of my 4" 57 again, same day at the range:

210-gr Remington jacketed soft points
average 1298 fps, spread 46.63, deviation 19.00

Both of these being .41s, they are accurate like a laser. ;)

Enjoy your gun, partner. :)

In the late 70's early 80's "we" had two loads. The 210 gr LSWC at just under 1000 fps and the 210 gr full mag Remingtons. The light load was great for P&Q and soft targets but had problems with penetrating cover. The full mags zipped through windshields and car doors but the muzzle blast and recoil were brutal for officers who only qualified once or twice a year with the light loads then were issued the mags for duty loads. Winchester saw the need for a mid range load that could bust cover, not over penetrate soft targets, and had controllable recoil. The 175 gr Silvertip was born. It was as close to perfect as could be wished for at the time.

They were my choice of duty loads until a magno-phobic chief forced me to retire the M-57.

I like the 41mag enough to have 3,000 rounds of brass ,three pistols, bullet moulds, star lubersizer, several thousands rounds of of jacketed bullets ,it's just plain fun to shoot at any load

I carried my own 210 grain JHP reloads in my duty gun for years. I couldn't afford factory ammo and I didn't want the hot Remington Soft points.

Mine were not particularly hot loads and were fairly pleasant to shoot. The "big guns" of the time did not see the need for barn burners in this round to be effective for LE applications.

As a Highway Patrolman, I wanted something with enough horsepower to penetrate cars, and mine would easily do that.

I have absolute and complete faith in the 210 grain JHP in the .41 magnum

Nuff sed!

I agree the remingtons are a bit hot. The recoil was a bit much for just shooting at a target and after a few rounds it just wasn't fun anymore. If the winchesters are more mild then I will definately be looking for more. I will be handloading very soon but til then, like someone said, I will be buying when I can!
Thanks for the info guys. I just inherited the gun from my Dad and I can honestly say I have fallen in love with the .41 mag! It's just plain cool!

I have a 7.5" 657. Very accurate.
Someone altered the trigger to 2 lbs single action.
Double action is smooth as glass.

I mostly reload 210gr.
I have to try the 185gr.
