Is there really much difference between the .41 Magnum and the .429 Magnum as far as "power" goes?

I don't have a 4" M-29 to compare it with my M-58.
Is there a noticeable difference or not much??

Thanks for the replies.
I had a 6.5" M-29 and never did shoot them on the same day.
I've shot my friend 4" M-29-2 but again not on the same day.
I find my M-58 fun to shoot.

A close friend of mine does all my reloading and this is what I shoot.

I have read the .41mag has the same energy out to 100 yards as the .44mag does. Obviously, this will depend on the loadings.

I've always wanted a .41mag after reading the book "The Evil That Men Do" by Lance Hill. An excellent read.

I have a 6" 57 and my son has a 6" 629. I've shot them both in the same session with 215 gr and 240 gr LSWC's respectively, both over healthy loads of 2400.

If anything, the .41 seems to have a little sharper report and recoil. I can't imagine any critter would know the difference if shot with either one.

If you can only afford to buy one, get the 44 magnum. The round is much more popular and available as is the revolver itself.

The 41 magnum is a capable round but unless you can truly afford both, I don't see much purpose in have the 41 magnum also. The 41 magnum is powerful but not as powerful as the 44 magnum and the recoil isn't all that much different. So if you want a milder load, shoot 44 specials or hand load for the 44.

I am a very big fan of the 41 mag. Even carried a model 57 S&W as a duty gun for years before going to the 1911. I am also a long time handloader and have plenty of brass and can load just about any load I want in my 41 mags at a price that compares to reloading the 44 mag.

But, I would reccommend most first time big bore shooters to go with the 44 mag, even more so if they do not hand load their ammo. Most stores carry 44 mag and 44 special ammo and not 41 mag. The Blackhawk in 41 mag and the SBH are more robust in strengh then the S&W and will hold up longer to max loads then the S&W will in both 41 & 44 mag.

I'm a huge 357, 44 and 500 fan. 41 and 460 were going to be my next purchases but then the corrupt establishment in Canada came up with a handgun freeze in May 2022...

I've shot both and owned and reloaded for both since 1975 .

I'm in the not much difference power camp .

I can tell you the 41 Magnum wants to shoot tiny groups ...
just about any load you shoot ... shoots well .

I Prefer the 41 Magnum ! The uncanny accuracy in my model 58 is somewhat amazing .
As for ammo , I reload and cast my own bullets ... for every firearm I own . If you reload the 41 Magnum is a real winner !

I like the .357 Mangum and the .44 Magnum. I own several of both. The 40 or 41 calibers are "in between" solutions without a problem that have never really been all that popular. Anything the .41 Magnum will do the .44 Magnum will do better. Larger diameter heavier bullets, more power, way more popular.

As a LEO, I bought a model 58 back in 1966 for $81.00 including a box of shells. I carried it for 13 years.
It did what it was designed to do and I never felt the need to try a 44 magnum.
The 41 magnum cartridge handled my every need.

I have the M57 and 629-6, both 6” barrels. The 44magnum hurts my lame hand much more than the 41 magnum. Wood stocks on both. I feel shooting the 44 is more accurate in my hands than the 41. (That’s only 25 yards.) The 44 Special in the 629 are pretty much equal to the 41 mag when I actually played with both back and forth. I never recorded the ammo weights, etc., but I don’t reload. The 44 magnum is definitely more accurate than any other revolver I own, besides my K22, for about 3 cylinders.
Yes, to me the 41 seems a tad easier to shoot at the range.

4 inchers in both. I carried the 41 guiding in Alaska. With my load in the 41 I shot through 2 bears one A/Y bull moose one elk in Wy. chest tō rear. and another elk side to side. It did the job. I have shot 2 whitetails with the 44...killed 'em both. I consider the 357 Max as better for deer 30 or so one shot deer. I enjoy the 41...not so much the 44. I do reload for both...and yes it is easier to find 44 factory ammo...but is not a concern for me

I bought my 57 in 67...Don't remember the price but it was about 100-110 dollars with the presentation box...in Fairbanks...also with a box of ammo. Bought 2 more boxes though. It shot to my point of aim right out of the box at 25 yards. I had a shoulder rig for my (pre)27 3 1/2 inch that it fit in just fine. Still have that holster...still makes ya lean to the left with an S frame...in 72 I bought a first year 58 that had only been shot 12 times.. Paid 75 dollars .I shot the other 38 rounds from the box and sold it

I have killed two deer with a revolver, 44 S&W Magnum and and a 41 magnum, Not that much difference between them.
I just prefer the .44 as it has tested it works with .44 SPL loads for fun...

Search is your friend...this is the 3rd thread on this topic in the last month.
Yep, this topic is getting to be popular. Not quite to the "9mm vs 45 ACP" or "best bear defense load" topics, but it's getting there. :D
