Knowing I like firearms, one of my employees brought me the below revolver and asked me if I would like to buy it. For S&W my knowledge is fairly limited to pedestrian K & J frames and Model 41s.

Would anyone have any information beyond what's to be found in The Standard Catalog?

The mechanism is tight and functions as it should. The bore rough with strong lands and grooves. The gun was originally nickel, with traces of the original finish found on the front strap, butt and protected areas. Serial # is 255623.

I would like to be fair to the man without being overly generous.

Thank you in advance for your courteous and knowledgeable replies.

In that condition I would pay 400.00 to 500.00. The internal parts are worth that much.

I must say that I have not seen any of these big bore DAs go for $400 for a long time. A working examples sell for $600 plus at most auctions today. Better condition 44 DAs are regularly approaching $800 - $1000.

At the last local gun show, one seller had a .44 DA in approximately the same condition as pictured and he had a $495 tag on it. It was nothing I was interested in, so I don't know how negotiable that price was.

I acquired this piece in the price range recommended and hauled it to the show this weekend where it quickly sold for enough of a profit to allow me to acquire something I find more interesting and recover a large portion of my initial cost.

Pre-Model 40 SER. 38xx. I believe this makes it 1952 or 53 production. About 90%+ original finish.

Thank you all for your knowledgeable assistance.
