Found this today at the show here in AZ. Its the 1st military I have seen for sale. Serial # S67727, all #'s match except the grips. The condition is a little less than I would have liked but I wasnt going to walk away. Upgrade later if I can find another.

Am at the hotel for the night so I will take some better pics when I get home and get some correct grips on it or maybe some Ivory

Wow! You got my attention - what a beautiful old .44. If it's too ugly for you, please let me take it off your hands.

Thanks, Jerry

Thanks Guys,

Hey John, I stumble hard trying to find these things

OK a question for you experts. the Std Catalog 3rd Ed says that this gun should have the small S&W Logo on the left side of the frame. It says the Large logo on the side plate doesnt show up until the S7XXXX range. Am I reading this right?

Any Comments?

Thanks again

Dan M

Jinks has written that the logo and it's size and position doesn't always follow the established pattern or production orders. If the big seal was damaged or worn, the factory wouldn't stop production until they fixed the old stamp, just use another one.

Nice sixgun!

Dan you have outstanding taste and even better fortune. May it last you forever. Congrats on a great find! Tony

All right these look a little better with the Ivory Magnas, Note the bluing loss between the Lug and Barrel

on the right side. Still I am Happy with it.

Very Nice Dan
One of these sits at the top of my "WANT LIST".
I wish I had your luck. I've been looking for quite some time now.

Dan,
I read that after your post- I must confess that I have not actually read all of SWSC.

You are reading it right, but that does NOT fit my observations over the years. I believe most Transition N frames will have the large, raised logo on the sideplate. There may be some with the small logo on the left, which would probably be old frames they found when cleaning up for the move to the new plant.

Thanks guys,

Lee,
I wasnt sure if maybe the 3rd Ed. was saying that only the Target models had the Side Plate logo. For the short time I have been chasing these old Horses I have to lean heavily on what I read as Gospel. But then I have learned to ask the questions to you experts.

The one thing that really surprised me was how few Post War Transitionals were listed in the Collectors Database, and if there were so few of them why the 3rd Edition does not place a higher Value than it does on these guns.

Thanks

Dan:

This gun caught my eye at the Crossroads show. I asked the seller if he had any room in his price due to the mismatched grips and loss of blue - he said "No, I'm holding it for a collector that is coming into town to go to the show."

Glad it was you that got it and it looks great with the Ivories - Congrats on a very nice piece!

Thanks RK,

After looking at the gun I was surprised it was still there at noon on Saturday, I had a table to mind also so I was slow making it over to that side of the building. He gave me the same story as you, so I wasn't the person he was waiting for. I did get him to drop 10% off his price though. I am pretty sure I did OK on this one.

Dan,
I took a look at some transition HDs and they have the large logo on the sideplate. Nice gun and I love the ivories!

I also just checked the transitional 38/44 HD that I picked up at the same show (S 659XX) and it also has the large logo on the right sideplate...
