I am looking for some starting loads for a 200gr TCFP in 44 magnum
with particular attention for unique powder.

The starting point loads are for loads for a S&W 329 2.5 barrel (no barn burners) would like to be between 800-1000 fps. Any recommendations would be great or links for reference. I also have 231,Trailboss and PowerPistol on hand.

thank you max,
I put some rounds together with trailboss and 231 from material gathered from LoadData I am still researching info for unique I use 7.0 gr of unique
for a 44 special but am unsure of going up to the mag case with the lighter bullet.

What did your reloading manual say? What did the powder manufacturers say?

I've got a cowboy load for the 44 mag listed as unique 6.3__8.2 in my log book for 200gr lead tc. Having never gone past 7.2 in my usage I could'nt tell what it does above 7.2 but it is a soft shooting load in a super redhawk 44. My normal 44 load with a 240gr lead keith bullet is 9.5 of unique for the full power shot. Charlie

dla, this was my double check for what I loaded
ladata had some info for trailboss and 231 anf I put a few loads together
with each on th starting loads
Trailboss 6.1gr to 7.7gr went with 6.1, 6.3 and 6.5 5 rounds of each.
231 5.8gr to 7.4gr went with 6.0 I seleted the 6.0 the 6.0 was fairly easy because that was a load I used years ago with NorthEastern 240gr swc which was mild and had good accuracey out of a 4" 629 and

I double checked the trailboss against IMR's web pages
and then went to the winchester powders web page and did a double check.

I asked about unique because I have not anything definitive on a 200gr cast bullet?

Just ran some 250g keiths I cast through my vaquero today with 8.5g of unique chrono at 1000fps.

I load 8.0 gr. of Universal behind a 240 grain LSWC. Controlable and very accurate.

I love that load...I shot a few different weights of Unique and settled on 8.5 with my 240 gr SWC. It is very accurate and very light on the recoil.

I load 6.5gr of Red Dot or PROMO under my 429421's for my Redhawk. They are very mild and pretty accurate. The same load should work
under a 200gr bullet.

I load 5.6grs of W231 in my 44 Spls., and it's a mild, accurate load. No reason it wouldn't be the same in the 44 Mag cases. My "standard" light load for the Magnum is 7.5grs w/ 270gr KSWC, and it's accurate and mild, but for what you're trying to do, I like your choice in bullet. I think the 231 Spl load I use will work very well for you under that bullet in your revolver.

I've been using 231 in my 3" 629. I load 8.7-8.9 grs of 231 with any 240gr JHP, FP or SP. But 8.9 grs of 231 with a Sierra 220 Sil. is my favorite. Very accurate. The same loads work with Jacketed 200gr. bullets too, just not the same.

IMO, Unique is too fast for .44 Magnum. W231 is too fast too. I use 2400 with good results, loaded on the hot side of center. Pressure can vary with light loads of fast powder, especially when there's a lot of space left in the case.

Another Green Dot user here. I load 7.0 grains of Green Dot under a 200 grain LRNFP out of a 4.5" barrel. Chronos at 1033 ft/sec. Will run a tad slower out of a 3.5" barrel.

Wow this thread has taken off after a few days Thank you all for the great info,
The 329ng or 329pd has temporally been replaced due to a nos 396ng at the local pusher. But all the info is great for my 29-2 &-4 I may be contacting TVB for another order in a week or so. I may have to look into a can of green dot to try out
