Can anyone comment on any experience with this ammo.

I have never shot a 44 mag out of the 629, just 44 specials at the shooting range.

Am I in for a big surprise or will it be fun?

Thanks in advance.

The ammunition you describe could best be described as an "average" 44 magnum load.
The issue is the perception of the shooter.
Recently, at my club, another member asked if I wanted to shoot his 629 Mountain Gun. Sure, I said.
He had a box of W-W loads, maybe same as what you describe.
Fired 6. Brisk, but very accurate. So, he asked if I wanted to shoot some more. Sure. Ended up shooting up the box.
Then he thanked me for shooting them for him as he felt they were too hot for him.
So, its all perception. Different strokes for different folks.
Only way to know is to buy some and do it. Certainly won't hurt any decent revolver.

Wish that I had club buddies like that....Love to shoot the warmer loads, but when it gets up and over $40 per box, I don't do it very often....

They are just about the warmest affordable rnd I've found for my 629-4. By affordable e I mean they come in boxes of 50 for around 32 dollars last time I bought a box which was last summer. I usually just buy BVAC 50 rnds for around 27 buck for a hollow point or a lighter loaded LSWC. I'm not buying anymore ammo till I have enough money saved to roll my own gonna reload .44 .357 and 45/70.

Should be fun, I don't shoot factory ammo, but that stuff should wake up your 629 a touch, enjoy it

My box only had 44 rounds in it. Someone else didn't like them and tossed them in the range's trash barrel. I was later given an unopened box of another .44M - I traded them. The UMC .44M's were available at Wally-world, and were 240gr SJHP, I believe. They are the only 'real' .44 Magnums I've shot in my 4" & 6" 629-6's, my homebrews being wimpy .44 Special-ish levels in the larger cases. I shot the 'real' Magnums in the aforementioned 629's with .500 Magnum Hogue monogrips and I'd rate the recoil as a little brisk - but certainly comfortable enough for follow-up shots. The padded backstrap and higher hold both helped. The few rounds I fired from my 629MG years ago - with Ahrends square conversion fg cocobolo grips, rated, by comparison, as 'OUCH!'. The lower grip enhanced the muzzle rise, too.

In any case, if all you have shot thus far are normal .44 Specials, those 240gr SJHP UMC .44 Magnum rounds will greet you thusly:

Wood grips: HELLO!
S&W/Hogue .500 grips: Hi!

Those grips are available only from S&W Accessories @ ~$36 and fit RB gripframes.

Like others have said, it is middle of the road ammo, recoil will be stout but not excessive. Here is my 6" 629-3, the long barrel really helps to tame recoil, warm and hot loads are manageable even with wood grips. I now have Kurac grips on it and they help even more.
