.44 Special ctg?!?

Glad to see this thread come back up. Blake, take care of yourself first! Though this bunch of folks are on the edge of their seat about your gun (me too!) it's more important that you heal properly.

BTW, I'll kick in another donation for the letter......anyone else?

44 special ctg revisited

Like ZooYork77. I too have a S&W 44 special with a ramp front site and a 3 1/2 in. barrel. The serial #s match those on the frame. At the time I purchased this gun I was told that 3 !/2 barrel was a factory replacement; something S&W did back in the day. Now I know what your thinking...but I do believe what I was told. You see, the gun came with a second barrel; 5 inches with a blade front site and the serial numbers on both barrels are the same and match the serial # on the frame. It may seem that I'm sitting here, satisfied with feathers sticking out of my mouth but that not really true. I followed this year old thread from a Yahoo inquiry and after reading some of the comments; I felt needed [ while consuming liberal libations ] to throw my hat in the ring and stick in my two cents worth, so to speak. Is this gun rare? Hope so. Not for the value, but it would be nice to know.... This was my first gun and the only one I kept when times got lean; the one that I didn't let slip through my fingers at the time: something we all can related to. I hope I hav'nt P.O. anyone; twas not my intent, but the hour's late and to bed I must go before the coming dawn. So I bid you all-Good Night !!!

Welcome to the Forum.

I would request a factory letter from the S&W historian, Mr Roy Jinks, to confirm how your .44 Special was shipped. It may have been returned to the factory to have the 3 1/2" barrel added, as 5" was a standard, though seldom seen, option.

Are there any rework dates on the gripstrap, like 1254 (Dec 1954). They may be seen as 12.54 also.

Welcome to the forum. Nice gun. As to the finish S&W will not refinish most pre model guns. I would recommend Fords in Florida for a good refinish.

Blake,

Thanks so much for the back story on this fascinating revolver!

A 3 1/2" .44 Special Smith and Wesson revolver emerging from our own great Southwest.
Dallas County just spitting distance from Tarrant County, Fort Worth with the history of Wolf & Klar and the S&W 3rd model.

And to think that a lawman would choose to carry as his personal sidearm a .44 Special
revolver with the handiest of barrel lengths and the Smith and Wesson Company of the 1950s taking a
special order for a non-standard barrel length to accomadate a Texas lawman. ;):D

A few dedicated shooters remain to carry-on in the shadow of the great ones, aliken to those of the 44 Associates, we are a meir wisp of the fog.

Whether or not your fine revolver letters to an original configeration...It is time for celebration, for all us old hands that really know what we like in a personal sidearm.

Blake, again please cherish your grandfather's revolver.
I reveille in your glory!

The revolver pictured below is one of my custom project from the early 70s, when a man couldn't find an affordable .44 Special anywheres.

She turned out soo good as a .44 Special shooter....I had 'er engraved to suit myself.
