Hi there, 5.3 of Bullseye and 6.5 of Unique with the cast 240gr bullet are good moderate loads that have proven accurate in my .44 specials.

Here I are!
Just went out today and shot off a passel of Snappers and Skeeters.
The Snappers (6.5g W231/250g cast SWC) were ACCURATE! I shot 30 rounds into one ragged hole at 7 yards. While that's not a long range, it is enough to enjoy the experience. More than standard 44Spl, but slightly less than a Skeeter.
The Skeeters were pretty sweet too.
I am loving the 4" 624, possibly my most accurate and favorite revolver.

My latest accuracy loads are 6gr. Unique with either a 240gr SWC
or a 200gr Gold Dot. Both punch a single hole with as many shots
as you want at 30 feet. Starline nickel plated brass. CCI 300 primers.
I am moving to the .431 Oregon Trail "Laser Cast" bullets as they
are more in tune with the over sized chamber throats of most
of my 1980's Smiths. The bullets actually measure .432 which
matches the chamber throats on most of the 629 and 624's of
the era. Stay tuned as I have just started a program to wring these
out in 3 magnums and 3 44 specials.
I got tired of the black sights and Smith grips
These are Herrett Jordan Troopers made to fit my hand.
Order figured walnut and you may luck out. I did.

Oh my heavens I want a gun like that SO BAD.
6 grains or so of HP-38 under that 240 bullet is a good load. 5.6 is soft, 6.5 has a little more oomph (but shot exceptionally well out of my flat top 44 Special Ruger).
My favorite 44 Special load, bar none, is either 7.5 grains of Unique (the Skeeter load), or it's slightly faster equivalent using Power Pistol at 8.5 grains. I have not found a gun yet that will not shoot those loads well. However, those may be a little more than "moderate". But they are still not what I'd call "stout".
If'n you want "stout", try 17 grains of 2400 under a 250 grain Keith bullet (Elmer's load). Or, the cleaner modern day equivalent of 16-16.5 grains of AA#9.
Those are a handful.

My most used load in the .44 Special is the Skeeter load (250 gr Keith ahead of 7.5 grs of Unique).
However, I have also thoroughly enjoyed the Cast Boolit Forum Group Buy 200 gr full wad cutter ahead of 4.0 grs of Bullseye or Red Dot (slightly more 231 works just as well). If you have Hodgdon "Clays" 3.5 grs is super clean burning and accurate for a nice mid-range load.
Needless to say, if I were restricted to only one bullet it would be the 250 gr Keith (H&G #503 clone by Mihec or Lyman 429421). I only have Smith and Wesson and Ruger .44 Specials so sizing to .430" works for me. My alloy is WW's+2% tin.
The 624 Smith is a superior revolver in my experience and anyone who is fortunate to have one is to be commended.

Say Hammer, where did you get these loads? Can you really get 17 grains of 2400 in a 44 Spl case?
Pecos who wonders how those would feel in his 24.

(250 gr Keith ahead of 7.5 grs of Unique). this is my 44 spec load, i dont enjoy it in the 3 inch gun as much as i did in my 4 inch, but the combats on my 624 dont fit my hand good anyway!
