Thank you
I am down to my last 500 or so winchester large pistol standard/magnum
primers and need to make a decision on the wolf primers that are available

I tried magnum primers with TB in an effort to help get a cleaner burn at low end loadings. It worked very well. Other than getting a bit cleaner burn, I didn't notice any significant changes but I didn't chrono for velocity. It is not a position sensitive powder so mag primers are unlikely to cause problems. The one thing it does not like is being compressed, and I would not want to do that with a mag primer lighting it. However, for 44SP loads you would have to double charge to even approach a compressed load and that would usually top the case.

I once used small pistol magnum primers by mistake in low velocity 40 S&W and found there was a small, ca. 20 fps, increase in velocity. Since then I have read the label on the carton more carefully.

A couple of months ago I tested substitution of Wolf LP Magnum for Winchester LP in one of my pet W231 loads using a 200gr LCSWC in a .45ACP. I reduced my standard load of 5.8 gr to 5.2 and tested 5.2, 5.4, 5.7 and finally 5.8 gr. The 5.2 through 5.7 loads developed a bit more velocity with the magnum primers. The 5.8 load was slightly less. Also, the SD was greater with the magnum primers on the lighter loads but was pretty much the same on the 5.8 load. Accuracy for all loads was comparable. Let me know if you want all of the details and I will be happy to send them.

I hope that helps,

Frank

Thank you for all the help folks
I have been away from some serious reloading for a while but with the shortage of some ammuniton and cost of others I might as well roll a few
boxes and I am looking for a 44mag/or special and want to insure I have my components right. I used WLP/mag exclusively along with 231 and H110 years ago and found I am lacking WLP primers in my stash so I ordered a few thousand wolf mag LP primers. Now I need that 2-3 inch 629 or 624
