I have been looking at .45's lately.I currently carry a S&W 642 but I like the stopping power of the .45.Today I looked at a Glock Mdl.36 which is about the physical size I want.Any other recommendations will be greatly appreciately.Thanks.

If you liked that size then try a M&P45c:

If you can find any of the SW single stack alloy frame 45"s they are nice as 65Kaiser mentioned. I have a ""value line" 457 which is very nice, The guts of the gun are the same as the 3rd gens, just different sights and no fancy serrations.

I only own 2 Glocks a 19 and a 36. I changed the trigger on both and the 36 handles the 45 very well. Springfield Armory just came out with the XDs which is thinner than the Glock, has a grip safety, I like it:D I still prefer guns with hammers and decockers and made of metal.

I sure liked my Glock 36. Light and handy to carry; I even carried it in a pocket. Very reliable; it even fed target wadcutters without a bobble. It was startling to see the empty case stroll leisurely out of the ejection port and fall at my feet. However recoil is pretty fierce with full power loads. It figures: the Glock is a little short of half the weight of a 1911, so it kicks almost twice as much.

Colt Lightweight Commander, or the S&W version. In the 3rd Gen lineup either a 457,4513,4516, or SIG P220.
As for the poly guns, I haven't kept up on them, but either the M&P or XD would be my pick over the Glock. Dale

If you want a polymer frame, striker-fired pistol, then the M&P 45 is hard to beat (the 45c is great too.) If you want a DA/SA pistol, then SIG P220 is the way to go. If you want a 1911, then get a Colt, S&W, or Springfield. I don't have any experience with S&W 3rd generations in .45, but many here speak highly of them.

Personally, I don't care for Glocks...I've owned many of them, and never found them to fit me well. If I am going to have a polymer pistol, it will be an M&P.

I've replaced my Glock 36 with a Springfield Armory XDm Compact in .45 ACP, as an EDC ---almost identical in size, but with higher-capacity mags, "safer" grip safety, and many other desirable features...

Great carry .45

I'm with you & Jeff Cooper that the .45 ACP is the best thing for personal defence.

If you Google Colt 'New Agent' .45 you will read about what I think is the best carry .45 made. I have fed it everything you can think of in ammo, from crusty old GI FMJ's, Hydro-Shock hollow points, and everything in between. I've 'limp wristed it', slow fire, rapid fire and have NEVER had a failure to feed with any ammo. It is smaller & lighter than most 9mm's

All of the gun reports that I Gooled said the same. It is light, very thin but mostly Very reliable. It is beautilully blued with very thin but beautiful Wood grips, (Yea) A 'trough' sight has nothing to hang up on as the slide is perfectly smooth. It is a little hard to get used to when shooting paper, but I didn't buy it for a target gun. They are not cheap @ about $1 K, But I think that is very reasonable for a gun that needs to be totally reliable if your life is on the line. And it's a Colt .45 in a very small & Beautiful package. I love it.

I have both the Springfield XD .45 and the M&P 45C. I prefer the M&P because the spring is easier for me to draw the slide back. I seem to recall it's an 18-lb vs. a 16-lb spring, which makes a difference to me. Springfield, when I called to ask, does not recommend changing to a lighter spring.

S&W 4516 :) If you run out of bullets...it can be used as a club.

I would stay with the Glock/MP/45XX series. Glock and M&P would be my first choice because parts and aftermarket support is everywhere, followed closely by the S&W 45XX.

1911 are nice but you really need to know what youre getting into with them since its a type of a gun not brand specific. Lots of ****, some good middle of the road and most of the better ones are pricy.

I've also found my bought used CS45 to be one reliable pocket sized .45 ACP blaster.

As it came from the factory:

I realize the plastic fantastics are good reliable guns and I have owned several of them. I never had any problems as far as reliability was concerned. I could never get used to the grip angle or trigger pull. Just a personal thing. If you like them and they work for you then I would go with what feels comfortable in your hand and what gives you the most confidence. I suppose I'm an old Fudd here cause I like the 1911 platform in Commander flavor. Either Colt, Springfield Armory or Smith & Wesson. Just throwing my two cents in the pot.;)

I thought the OP was kinda thinking a carry piece? As nice and wonderful as 1911's are they are kind of tough to lug around all day.

Of course the big manly men that wear Old Spice and live in the frozen North, with heavy jackets can do that.:D

Here in the South it difficult with speedos but the women seem to gather around.:) But then they realize it's a gun and run away,:o:(
