.45 Schofield loads needed

Hi all, I recently picked up a new/used Uberti open top 1860 Army Richards type conversion in 45 Colt. Now for some odd reason I got it into my head to load 45 Schofield for use in it. Anyone have any loading data with smokeless powder suitable for an open top conversion gun, I really dont want to get too warm with no top strap! Was thinking black powder loads but dont want to get into that right now. My thank's in advance.

How about reduced .45 Colt loads? Like a 250gr LSWC over 6 - 7 gr of Unique? I just got 500 Schofield cases and am going to load them just a bit hotter (~7.5gr) than that for my 625 MG.

I bet Stainz has some experience with Schofield.

The Hodgdon website has loads for the 45 Schofield. My choice would be TrailBoss. It works well in just about any revolver case, particularly the bigger ones like the 44's and 45's. Bob!

If you want to make good ammo that's totally safe in that reproduction IMO there's no better powder than Trail Boss.

There was a Dillon article a while back that said the original was 28 gr of FFG black powder and a 230 grain bullet which did about 750 f/s.

I use 200 gr cast bullets and 5 grains of Trailboss for SASS shooting in my Wells fargo models Schofield and my SA Colts

I took the starting load from Hodgdon website of 4.5 Titegroup with 185-200 gr SWC and found the most pleasant load for use in Ruger cowboy and older Colt/SW DA revolvers. The old DAs are pre WW2 and I wanted a light load.

Whoa!!!

The Schofield case is considerably shorter than the 45 Colt case. So substituting 45 Colt data in the shorter case will raise pressure an unpredictable amount. Alliant lists 6.1 grains of Unique under a 230 grain bullet.

Yes, the original 45 Schofiled load was about 28 grains of FFg under a 230 grain soft lead bullet. I load mine with about 28 grains of FFg under a 200 grain bullet.

hi i use a s&w 2000 model schofield ,i dont use a very heavy load simply because it doesn't need it ,.my load is a 200grn semi wad cutter lead head with 4.3 grs of bullseye ,with the WAD CUTTER part of the bullet just below the schofield case neck and the slightest roll over it leaving the pointed bit of the bullet above the case neck .nothing beats it for accuracy in the S&W schofield. please try it and let me know.
