4506-1 purchase

Just bought A nice 4506-1 for $575 with 3 clips and 100 rounds of ammo. Is this model worth a flip and did I get screwed?

Nice ones are going for around $400 to $450 around here.

You may have over-paid some but, it's a subjective thing.

With the extra mags and ammo you probably came out alright on a nice firearm.

Hmmmm, let's see...
The ammo is worth about $45.00 and magazines regularily sell used for +- $30.00 each (but ya gotta get at least ONE with the gun!) so that means you basically spent $470.00 for one of the coolest, most reliable and accurate .45s ever made. Can you live with that? I know that I could and here's proof...

Prices for these vary from region to region, so you have to take comments about prices with a grain of salt. Here in my corner of Kalifornia if I paid that it would be considered a great find and price, elsewhere I'd be considered a rube.

Sure, you can find police trade-ins in great shape for less, but those are few and far between, the ones found for less are typically mechanical sound but "cosmetically challenged".

I really lucked out and got a LE trade in at a great price that included 5 mags and it shows little sign of being issued and carried.

So enjoy your new toy which, as someone previously said, is extremely reliable (a tank), not sensitive to variations of ammo (shoots whatever you feed it), and accurate. There are many people that wish they could find one to buy, so you're ahead of the game.

If you're anything like the typical new 4506 owner, the grips on it may not be to you liking> Many people on the forum have "surplus" grips from trying to find something that feels right, so if yours has a factory straight back grip and you want to switch to a curved one or hogues, ask here... someone probably will have a set that has been languishing around in a box that they are willing to part with.

A 4506-1 is my daily CCW gun. They are extremely reliable and accurate. I bought one of the first run of 4506's back in 1988/9. It had fixed sights, but it was also very accurate, and shot to point of aim with most any normal .45 ACP round. It would throw empties into a coffe cup religiously if you stood in the same spot.

The one I have now doesn't do that, but is even more accurate, just as reliable and has the added advantage of adjustable sights for times I want to try different loads. Both of mine would/will feed anything reliably. Even empties.

Price is relevent to location. Just enjoy owning one of the best auto's ever made and don't worry about what it cost.

One of the best autos there is IMO. At my age I don't let a few dollars too much keep me from getting one I really want. The way I look at it is that I will get most of it back if I ever sell it. What I lose if any is cheap entertainment for the time I kept it. What I lose on one I wll get it back on another one.

Maybe you payed about market price for a good used pistol and 3 "magazines" with ammo. So don't worry about it. You did alright!
I own a 4563TSW which is litterally the same gun with an alloy frame and a rail. I love it and it is my HD gun with a light mounted.

That is a fine price, have a local shop still trying to get me to buy a 4506-1 that was a local PD's gun, that only got used for yearly qualify. Great shape with box and couple mags, but the catch is he's asking $680. It's gonna be a nice looking piece in his shop for some time at that price.

mags are $30-35 each...I just bought a bunch; the gun is easily worth $450 alone; .45 ammo is non-existent (here)....so you did ok.

If you like it, you did good. Look around, what is available currently that is forged and machined stainless steel? Has a stellar reputation for reliability? Has a factory in the states that backs their product?

How much are all-stainless 1911's or Sig's? Or even stainless 357 revolvers?
