Hi - First post in this forum...I hope this has not been covered before...if so I am sorry! I have tried to search the forums and google for help on this issue but so far have not come up with anything...if there's a thread already started please let me know!

I recently purchased a gently used 4506-1 in great shape...Love the fit and finish...

Before taking it to the range I noticed that sometimes after thumbing the hammer back the trigger would lock up...i am still able to de-cock and use the double pull to make it work again...The slide also is free...i believe it has something to do with the trigger disconnect...If i drop the mag and try the trigger (while cocked) it feels the same as it does with the mag in while locked...I sometimes could get the trigger to "unlock" but popping the mag out and slamming it back in...

I took the gun to the range and it worked wonderfully...I only had one round that it locked up on...slamming the mag back in fixed that problem on the range...

I am not comfortable carrying a gun that locks up on me so I started to do some searching online trying to find info on this problem...somewhere I read that it was possible to over-ride the mag disconnect by pulling hard on the trigger...I stupidly decided to try this...i was able to drop the hammer by putting just a little more then normal pressure on the trigger...it seemed to be a soft drop and I doubt it would make the round go off...anway...now that gun locks up pretty much every time I thumb the hammer back...it also locks up when I rack the slide back...I'm pretty sure I just made it worse...

So what do I do now?? I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to correct it?? I have not yet contacted Smith and I was hoping to avoid doing so...I would rather not have to send the gun off...I just spent all my extra $$$ on purchasing the gun and it might be a few months before I cant afford to have a bunch of gun-smithing done to fix this problem...

Any help would be appreciated

Could be the drawbar or disconnector is binding or sticking due to dirt or residue, etc. If you are familiar with how to disassemble, check the drawbar and disconnector are free.. I have also seen magazines not engage the ejector/mag depressor lever properly.......are you using OEM magazines? The magazine should lift the ejector lever up when inserted.
If you're not familiar with how to disassemble, you might try spraying the internals with a pressurized cleaner like Gun Scrubber to see if that helps. If you use these cleaner/degreasers keep in mind they strip off all the oils from the gun, so you will need to re-hydrate with a good quality light oil like Rem-Oil spray for instance. If the gun is older, springs or other parts may need to be replaced, and a visit to a S&W armorer or S&W may be in order. You can call them at 800-331-0852

Thanks for your quick reply Armorer951 for your quick reply - I have been pretty busy at work and have not had much time to look at/work on getting this gun repaired. I pulled it out again today and started to compare it to my other smith autos - I now believe it is a problem in the trigger assembly - the assembly seems loose when viewed from above - and the assembly is catching in a place that my other autos aren't - I guess a call to Smith is my next step
