Just picked up a 4506-1
It appeares to be in very good condition.
The first thing I did notice was peening of the guide rod and then upon disassembly and inspection, I notice a chunck of metal missing inside the slide where the guide rod travels.
It does not appear to be normal, or wear and tear.

I've sent an email with pictures of to smith

It's not uncommon, the recoil spring would keep the rod from coming in contact with that area. The bore area is angled downward to make room for the barrel to drop down to unlock. That usually leaves that area thin and rough. The aluminum guide rods show that wear pattern, I always replace the recoil spring in a used gun but other than sometimes installing a steel rod I don't worry to much about the aluminum ones.

Handgunner,
this gun is very clean except this, the previous owner said it only had about 300 rounds through it. The gun displays very little wear overall, except the missing metal and the wear on the guide rod.
overall until I saw this, I would rate the gun at least 95%.
would it be normal to see this happen in so few rounds and is the gun still shootable?

Thanks

Mark

Quite shootable, it most likey left the factory that way. I have taken and cleaned up that rough area with a dremel tool before, kind of made a U-notch, but it isn't nessasary. You'll still have a tough time trying to wear it out.

Thanks again for the responses Gents
Handgunner356, you were right on the money.
I recieved this email back from S&W

"This all appears normal, the slide is thin in that area and we file it out to the "v" shape during assembly"

Now I'm ready for a range trip

Have a great day all

Mark
