The blasted stainless is a nice finish but sorta hard to care for once it gets scuffed or scratched. The only real way to fix those gaffs is to take the gun apart, all the way down, and have the slide and frame reblasted. Interestingly if you do this and replace the delrin grips with new ones the gun will appear virtually new. The only way you could tell is if you took it apart and checked it for normal wear.

I like the look of the polished barrel chamber on my pistols, the Smith autos will "spot" polish the top of the chamber anyway as the slide cycles over it. I got to thinking about it and decided to just shine all of it up, looks great.

Thanks for the tip Bullitholz.....I used to have the chambers of my pistols polihed and jeweled too,,,I have a pic of my 4566 done that way...Yours is great, that's a keeper for sure....Zebulon

Hey headknocker, I have been wondering and searching for aftermarket sights for my 645. How are they installed? only by a gunsmith? and where did you get them? Looks awesome with that wood grip, cant wait until I get mine!

Hey Camocustom, before you start upgrading that 645 you might want to take it out to the range and shoot it some. Many of these pistols were pretty accurate right out of the box and don't really need any barrel or slide work.

hey bullitholz,

We took it out yesterday and shot about 150rds trough it. I do not like the sights at all, i was kind of hoping for a hi viz sight for it.

Sights can be a problem with some pistols, especially if your used to a specific type of sight, like white dots.

Seems to me that the front sight on that gun is integral to the slide? I know I like the orange inserted front sights on my revolvers so the 645 with stock sights would be comfortable to me I would think , based on what I have seen.

The rear sight is a simple dovetail style if I rememner correctly and there used to be aftermarkets available to replace the fixed sight that simply slipped into the dovetail in the slide. Most guys went aftermarket on their 645's because they wanted adjustable sights instead of the fixed, combat style that cam stock from the factory.

I'm not surew but Novak might be a good place to look because they were involved heavily with S&W where the auto's were concerned. Many S&W auto's have Novak's installed on them stock from the factory.

Yes, you are right the front is integrated with the slide, I dont mind it, its the "U" shaped rear I have the problem with, I would rather have an adjustable in the rear, just wasnt sure if the slide had to be taken fully apart to get to the sight.

The first 4506 I owned back in 89'(thought it was 88 but I was wrong)had the fixed sights and the rear sight had an annoying habit of working loose in the dovetail. A little locktite stuck it in place as I recall.

I'm not totally sure but I think that the rear dovetail is ever so slightly tapered and the sights will come out easier in one direction than the other, which will cause them to get tighter actually. a brass drift and a small hammer should be used to tap the sight out from the side, or to adjust it for windage.

Alright, thanks Bullit! I am going to try to get it off, I did find some novak rear adjustable sights for a decent price. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for posting that for me Gary, The sights on my 645 came from Brownells.. and they are GREAT. white bar with white dot. FULLY adjustable

I bought one of the first 645s back in the 80's. I had Novak's .45 Shop convert it to single action, making it essentially an all stainless 745.

Oh, Very nice. looking at yours, I am hoping mine will look similar with the grips I have on order. should be getting them by the end of the week. Will post pics!

Is that a 4506 slide? my 645 has the integrated front sight. or was that part of novak's shop work?

Hi DW,
This was a stock 645. It was manufactured well before the 4506 was developed.
Since Wayne Novak had been involved with the development of S&W's .45 autos, I sent the gun to his shop. All of the custom work was done by them.
I'm looking forward to your pics!

I remember when the 4567 came out...I was connected to a S&W Stocking Dealer and we got EVERYTHING there.....That was one of the prettiest of that era...Thanks for posting it Zebulon
