I am working on my wish list. Which one would you get?
5906 and 6906 are one my list too. I have a 915 on its way.
The gun will be a safe queen and range toy. I won't carry it or use it for HD. Although that could always change. I find myself moving away from plastic and back towards metal guns.

There's a reason the 4566 sits between the 4516 and the 4506 in the 3rd Gen .45 line-up. It is the sweet spot!

I went through the back to all metal frame semis a while back too and the best purchase I made was a bobbed hammer de-cock only model 4566. Pin point accurate, just right heft and balance, great trigger in SA mode. I like it as much as my much more expensive 1911, and better than my German Sig P220 which says a lot.

The 4506 is great too but handle a 4566 and 4506 and tell me which one balances and points better.

If you like the 3rd Gen 9mm double stacks I'd say the 6906 is tough to beat vs. the 5906. I outfitted my 6906 with the 5906 magazines and the S&W magazine extension that fills in the gap perfectly. The 5906 will feel a lot like the 4566 so my advice would be to have more versatility in your line-up because you could more easily carry the 6906 vs. the 5906 if you wanted to. The bottom line here is there is no wrong answer if you find a clean and pampered 3rd Gen. For me condition is key based on the fact it's getting harder or much more expensive to find clean non abused 3rd Gens.

That's a really tough call! I have a 4506, 4566 and a 4516. I love them all. I bought the '16 new way back in the day and added the '06 and '66 in more recent years. I guess I'm kind of like you. I, prefer other guns for CCW and HD but for the pure fun of shooting there's nothing I own that I enjoy shooting more than my 4506 no dash, and that includes a few really wonderful revolvers. My accuracy is best with the '06 and it never fails to feed or eject no matter what kind of crappy ammo I'm using. So, I guess I've answered your question from my perspective, it's the 4506. However, in the best of all worlds, get both of them.

Since you are not going to carry it I would get the 4506 first. The price on 4506s seems to rise by the month. Then I would pick up a 4566...........and a 4516, 4513TSW, 457, CS45.

Well you get the idea. ;) Regards 18DAI

Smith 3rd Gen steel .45s are like the story of ......" The Three Bears" ...................

The 4516 was the right size for concealed carry but just tooo heavy.....

the 4506 shoots anything like a dream; but, too big and heavy to lug around all day.......

the 4566 is just right!!!!!!!

That's my "story" and I'm sticking to it!

:D

I've had a 4516,4513, 4505 and still have a 4566

Between the two you mentioned, and the fact that it will be a safe queen (a shame, really, but if that's your choice.....), choose the 4506. A great, classic Third Gen by any measure for what it was designed to be.

If, however, there's the tiny chance that you might, in a weak moment, ever take your safe queen out for a few rounds, then look ahead and choose the 4566 now. It would be too bad if you denied yourself the chance to shoot that one. :)

DISCLAIMER: I own and shoot a 4566, and though I have not owned or shot a 4506, I did have a 4006 for awhile before moving on to smaller semi-autos. It truly was a hand cannon -- in the good way -- as I am sure the 4506 would be as well.

I regularly shoot both my 4506-1 and 4516-2.....both range weapons and they fill that role well...never handled a 4566 but can see why it would be choice of many.....all said and done my 4506-1 would be the hardest to part with

.............and as far as a 6906 or 5906?.......hands down for me is a 6906 by a mile......blasphemous I realize but I never could warm up to a 5906...and it was the first 3rd. Gen. I owned

SO TRUE!!!

I mostly collect S&W revolvers so except for a 5903 SSV that is NIB (with the box) and is a total safe queen my 3rd Gen guns are carry guns, fun guns at the range, etc. But I don't have a boatload of them; just three. CS-45, 6906, and a newly acquired (used) CS-9. I swapped out my SIG SP-2022 9mm for the CS-9 9mm because the SIG was so much like the 6906, except for the polymer frame, and these are not collectors for me, these are users and I prefer metal framed pistols. My point being, you simply cannot go wrong with a good condition 3rd Gen pistol.
