4516 Question for the 3rd Gen Experts. UPDATE POST 10

A local chain store has what I am pretty sure is a 4516 in the case that comes with 3, 7 round magazines.

I am uncertain of the dash number because the store has a key lock in place and the clerk that assisted me could only offer that "it was a pretty color" when I asked to see it. In her defense I think she was just filing in for the regular gun counter guru.

It was not marked on the tag what it was but the price was just under $350.

It looked to be pretty clean and not in bad shape from the brief check that I was able to do.

From what I can see, if it functions properly, that appears to be one heck of a price.

What say those that are more knowledgeable than I?

I know you need pics, etc... but unfortunately I can only say that I didn't see any obvious scratches or blemishes on it and the barrel hood did not a seem to have many marks from shooting on it.

I don't need pics to know that this 3rd Gen would have left the store with me that same day for $350. I wouldn't have even tried to haggle as I normally do.

I cannot imagine looking at that pistol and not leaving with it

virtually any third Gen. pistol in decent shape with three magazines is worth that money without even batting an eyelash

A 4516-whatever for $350? It would be in my safe right now if I saw it first. Definitely a "buy it now"! Great little guns.

Buy it..... IMHO and experience; 4516s with steel frames are heavy for their size; but great guns!

SCS&W says no dash bring a premium.

Unless it was crushed flat by a steam rolling, it's well worth $350.00. Very little goes wrong with 3rd Gens, especially all stainless ones.

For identification purposes, the "no dash" 4516 will have a wide rib on top of the slide and a "stepped" frame.

The later "dash" models have a smooth top slide and a non-stepped frame.

S&W replaced the "no dash" models with the "dash" models due to reliability issues.

I went back to get a good look and buy it and it was a 457S.

So an okay price considering the shape but not a must have

An excellent price for a 457S. They are certainly "value line" but can be equipt with better sites.....essentially a 4516 with some bargain touches.

i have a weakness for 3 (and some 2) G smitties at a reasonable price. I'm still in awe of the low prices of these guns and am pretty sure that people will realize that eventually. Anyone remember when N frames were going for $200 all day long??? I sure do!

Bought a very nice 629-1 (in the box) for $250.

That would make for a very hard to beat general purpose utility gun for camping, travel, whatever. Also a good one to potentially put in an emergency kit along with 2-3 boxes of ammo for emergencies.

Yup, even if it was "only" a 457S, that's a great price.

I have a nib 457S I bought here years ago . Never saw a reason to fire it , I have a couple of other 457's . Considering that are a " Value Line " piece , they are great guns . How many do you see for sale ? I'm guessing it's because most people like them and thus don't put them up for sale very often .

I remember my brother wanted a S&W Model 25, one dealer had one with a scratched side plate for $350, he was almost ready to buy when i came back and said follow me, Two aisles over guy had a 25 in the presentation case for $250. Even the last Model 28 Highway patrol turn in i got for $175, at some point prices went crazy, it went from a piece of your paycheck to better make installments
