4556 help

I recently acquired a smith and wesson model 4556 to add to my 3rd gen 45acp collection. While I wasn't very familiar with the model once I got home I googled it and found that it's a pretty rare model. Here is my issue, my 4556 is blue and I can't seem to find any info on any blue 4556 being made. So either is gun was aftermarket blued or this is an extremely rare gun. Your input is greatly appreciated

4556 denotes an all stainless steel construction
Would not a blued one of those be in truth a M4554?

Looks like a well worn paint job to me ie. gun-kote, duracoat, cerakote, krylon, rustoleum;) et al.

Cheers
Bill

4554 blued Aluminum frame?
4555 blued steel frame?
But neither blue variant known?
Aftermarket job on 4556.

Loctite SF 790 gasket remover, formerly known as "Chisel" ought to clean that gunk off.

Be careful with that though, it's mostly methylene chloride, nasty nasty stuff.

The previous owner of that pistol should be beaten with it.

Whatever he coated it with, it isn't very durable. CitriStrip should take it off.

I've had several 3rd Generation stainless pistols treated with Melonite, which is very durable.

If you think the pistol is carbon instead of stainless, put some cold bluing paste on a worn spot and see if anything happens.
